1) Since 2009, the largest group of refugees from a single country accepted through the Australia Government’s humanitarian settlement program have come from Burma.[1]

2) The first Myanmar people to settle in Australia were the so called 'Anglo-Burmese', of Myanmar and European descent.[2]

3) Burmese refugees in Australia have reported multiple and severe pre-migration traumas, and substantial proportions of study participants report post-traumatic stress disorder (9%), anxiety (20%) and depression (36%). [3]

4) Burmese Australians perceived social connection as a key part of health within their culture. Most community members tend to move where their community members already there so it is very important for community.[4]

5) One study conducted on Burmese refugees reported high rates of H. pylori infection (80%), latent TB infection (70%), vitamin D deficiency (37%), and strongyloidiasis (26%) in Burmese refugees attending the infectious diseases clinics of a Melbourne tertiary referral hospital. Similarly, a high rate of parasitic intestinal infections has also been documented in refugees from Burma in Thailand (8–10) and North America (6,7). [5]
