The 1970's

  • 1976: QUBE starts planning the first ever television channel for kids.
  • December 1, 1977: Pinwheel is launched. It only broadcasted 6 hours a day.
  • 1979: Pinwheel is officially launched.

The 1980's

  • 1980: Geraldine Laybourne joins the Pinwheel production team.
  • April 1, 1981: The Pinwheel television network is renamed Nickelodeon. The Pinwheel network becomes a TV block. ARTS launches.
  • 1983: Geraldine Laybourne becomes Nickelodeon's first president.
  • February 1, 1984: ARTS is renamed A&E Network.
  • 1984: The pinball logo of Nickelodeon is replaced with a new logo called the "slime/splat" logo. It was created by the company Fred/Alan. Nick 2 is launched.
  • July 1, 1985: A&E Network drops the four-year partnership with Nickelodeon, leaving Nickelodeon broadcasting 24 hours a day. The Nick at Nite block is launched.
  • 1986: The Big Ballot broadcasts.
  • March 1, 1988: The Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards broadcasts annually.
  • 1988: Nick Jr. is launched.
  • 1989: Pinwheel ceases transmission.

The 1990's

  • June 7, 1990: Nickelodeon Studios is opened.
  • 1990: Nickelodeon Magazine is officially published. It was only available in the Pizza Huts. It was discontinued after two issues.
  • August 11, 1991: The Nicktoons brand is launched.
  • August 15, 1991: SNICK is launched.
  • April 30, 1992: The Nickelodeon time capsule is buried for 50 years.
  • June 1993: Nickelodeon Magazine is revived.
  • 1993: You Can't Do That on Television is cancelled.
  • September 1, 1993: The first Nickelodeon outside of the US, Nickelodeon UK is launched.
  • April 16, 1994: All That starts broadcasting as a replacement for You Can't Do That on Television.
  • October 1995: Nick.com is launched.
  • 1996: Natalie's Backseat Traveling Web Show broadcasts on Nick.com.
  • April 29, 1996: TV Land is launched.
  • 1998: Natalie's Backseat Traveling Web Show is cancelled. The website gets redirected to Nick.com.
  • February 2, 1999: Noggin is launched.
  • March 1, 1999: Nick GAS is launched.
  • May 1, 1999: SpongeBob SquarePants airs for the first time. The show becomes a flop and would be cancelled until Nickelodeon decided to renew the show for a second season.

The 2000's

  • July 8, 2000: TEENick is launched.
  • 2000: Nick on CBS debuts on CBS.
  • 2001: The Nick broadband video games for rent is launched.
  • 2002: A newer version of the splat logo is debuted on all Nickelodeons for the first time.
  • April 1, 2002: The N is launched.
  • May 1, 2002: Nicktoons is launched.
  • August 28, 2004: SNICK is cancelled.
  • 2005: Nick Germany is launched. The logo for the channel is different.
  • 2005: TurboNick is launched.
  • November 23, 2006: Nick Pakistan is launched. The logo for the channel is different.
  • December 31, 2007: Nick GAS is closed on cable.
  • February 2, 2009: TEENick & Nick Jr. is renamed Hollywood Hang & Play Date.
  • April 23, 2009: Nick GAS is closed indefinite.
  • Summer 2009: TurboNick is renamed Nick Video.
  • September 28, 2009: All Nickelodeon TV networks except TV Land get a new logo.
  • December 2009: Nick Magazine ends publication.
