About

[edit]

KSOS was founded in 2012 and is designed to provide an ideal research environment to enable the qualification of young researchers and their autonomous research in the interdisciplinary research field of services. This field of study try to aim at a holistic understanding and purposeful shaping of complex service systems.

Such service systems are characterized by joint value creation of multiple independent parties whose interaction is enabled through the systematic use of information and communication technologies (ICT).

Service systems are built on top of new IT architectures, create design and engineering challenges and require the assessment of their economic and societal implications.[1]

Service Research

[edit]

Services make up the largest part of the GDP in industrialized countries. In contrast to development, marketing and delivery of physical goods, research on development processes and value chains in services is still a young discipline.[1]

IDEAS Perspectives

[edit]

Due to the interdisciplinary view, relevant service research questions require a joint analysis based on the expertise from several perspecive at the same time. Here they are called: IDEAS perspectives. It’s the opinion of KSOS tha this interplay between the perspectives helps fulfil the requirement of a holistic approach.[1]

The five IDEAS perspectives are

Industry Domains

[edit]

Complementary to the IDEAS perspectives on services, KSOS focuses on cross cutting application domains that provide real-world scenarios and applications. This seems to assure relevance and applicability of teaching and research outcomes and this should stimulate interdisciplinary research and education within the program and with external partners.[1]

Current global trends motivate the formation of six such service domains

PhD Program

[edit]

KSOS offers an interdisciplinary PhD Program in Service Science, combining technological, economic, legal, and societal perspectives. KSOS has developed and implemented a Ph.D. program in the area of “Services". While the main focus of the Ph.D. training lies on the graduate student research work, the KSOS is convinced that additional elements in the doctoral training are needed to reach the optimum academic success and to develop leadership capabilities.

The 3-year PhD program comprises a research project leading to a Ph.D. thesis. As a specific focus, the program considers the diversity of career paths (termed as the “Y-model”): It offers both the classical academic career path as well as the option for an industry career path after the Ph.D..[1]
