ASP.NET History

Started in late 1997, early 1998, in the wake of IIS 4.0.

First team at Microsoft to make use of the Common Language Runtime.

Simple Managed C language and compiler was originally used as there was no managed-code compiler at the time. SMC was later shipped as a complete code sample in the first .NET Framework SDK.

95% of ASP.NET written in C sharp, remainder in C++.

June 2000 announcement, PDC. Name was planning on being ASP+, reflecting the use of COM+ at the time.

Microsoft didn't originally own the ASP.NET domain name; owners refused to sell it to Microsoft, but then later put it online for a "blind auction", and Microsoft didn't get the bid. The owners didn't like the people who won the bid, and so they sold the domain to Microsoft.

Version 1 shipped in late 2001.

Version 2 was shipped in late 2005, and is a significant upgrade, with approximately four times the total number of features of version 1.1.
