Conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November, as the prelude to a revolt in the Midlands during which James's nine-year-old daughter, Princess Elizabeth, was to be installed as the Catholic head of state. Catesby may have embarked on the scheme after hopes of securing greater religious tolerance under King James had faded, leaving many English Catholics disappointed. His fellow plotters (pictured) were John and Christopher Wright, Robert and Thomas Wintour, Thomas Percy, Guy Fawkes, Robert Keyes, Thomas Bates, John Grant, Sir Ambrose Rookwood, Sir Everard Digby and Francis Tresham. Fawkes was given charge of the explosives. Adam Yauch (August 5, 1964 – May 4, 2012) was an American rapper, songwriter, and film director. Known by his stage name MCA, Yauch was best known as a founding member of hip hop trio the Beastie Boys, which was formed in 1979 in New York City. The group's discography during Yauch's lifetime included singles such as (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!), Ch-Check It Out and Sabotage. Yauch was diagnosed with parotid cancer in 2009, for which he underwent treatment. He later resumed his role with the Beastie Boys, contributing to the release of Hot Sauce Committee Part Two in 2011. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012, although Yauch was too ill to attend. (more...)

The eastern amberwing (Perithemis tenera) is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It is very small, reaching a total length of no more than 25 millimetres (0.98 in). Males have orange or amber wings, and both sexes have a red pterostigma. The species is found in eastern North America, from northern Mexico northwards to south-eastern Canada. The eastern amberwing is one of the only types of dragonfly that actively mimics a wasp; the yellow and brown stripes on its abdomen encourage predators to stay away. This male eastern amberwing was photographed in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York City.
