From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spring is an acoustic pop and indie pop band formed in Paris in April 1993 around singer and musician Alexandra Pavlou, who also contributed to the band Rosa Luxembourg and the project Suburbia with Marc Collin. Influenced by 1960s British pop, Felt, Françoise Hardy, and trip-hop, the group released its first recordings through the Spanish independent label Elefant Records. Active until the year 2000, Spring recorded three albums and several singles, collaborating with artists such as Moose, Pez, Stereolab, and Extra Lucid, before disbanding following the international release of The Last Goodbye.

Biography

[edit]

Spring was formed in April 1993 by Alex Pavlou, Jean-Baptiste Garnero, and Daniel Dauxerre. A demo sent to Bob Stanley of the band Saint Etienne landed their song Bob Cool on the compilation We Are Icerink in 1994.

The original trio underwent a lineup change: Daniel left to manage the band Darlin’ (future Daft Punk) and was replaced by François Jugé, while Christophe also joined the group. In 1994, their first EP, Something Beginning, produced by Thomas Bangalter, marked their recording debut.

In 1995, they recorded the album Tokyo Drifter in London with producer Brian O’Shaughnessy. The album blended original compositions, a Françoise Hardy cover, and a duet with Kevin McKillop (Moose). The single Be My Star (1995) explored a pop/trip-hop fusion with Extra Lucid and Indurain. In 1997–1998, their collaboration with DJ Javi Pez resulted in the mini-LP Out Of Time and the compilation Spring and Friends.

Spring performed as an opening act for bands such as Moose, The Divine Comedy, Pulp, and Lush.

Despite the departure of Jean-Baptiste and the involvement of various guest musicians, the group maintained an active live presence, participating in events like the Alternative Eurovision Contest 1998 and festivals in London and Brighton, where they received positive press from Mojo, Mixmag, and others. After the international release of The Last Goodbye (1998), followed by tours and TV appearances, the band went on hiatus and officially split around 2000.

Alex Pavlou then launched the project Suburbia, produced by Marc Collin. She would later collaborate with him again, lending her voice to several tracks for Nouvelle Vague.

Christophe Plantier went on to co-found the band Luke, where François Jugé would also join for a time.
