Decap CMS

[edit]

Decap CMS is an open-source content management system (CMS) designed to manage websites and web applications with a focus on simplicity and flexibility. Originally known as "Netlify CMS," Decap CMS provides a Git-based content management workflow, allowing developers and content editors to collaborate efficiently using Git repositories.[1]

Decap CMS integrates directly with static site generators like Jekyll, Hugo, and Gatsby, making it a popular choice for managing static websites. It allows users to create, edit, and publish content through a user-friendly interface, with the added benefit of version control via Git. The CMS is decoupled from the backend, offering flexibility in how it is deployed and used across different projects.

Features

[edit]

Git-Based Workflow: Decap CMS stores all content as JSON files in a Git repository, enabling version control, branching, and pull requests for content changes.

User-Friendly Interface: The CMS provides a clean and intuitive interface for content editors, making it easy to create and manage content without needing to touch code.

Static Site Generator Integration: It integrates seamlessly with popular static site generators, offering a streamlined workflow for static website management.

Customizable: Users can easily customize the CMS to fit the needs of their specific projects, including custom widgets and editorial workflows.

History

[edit]

Decap CMS began its journey as Netlify CMS, an open-source content management system introduced by Netlify in 2016. The goal was to provide a Git-based CMS that could seamlessly integrate with static site generators like Jekyll and Hugo, aligning with the rise of the Jamstack architecture. This approach allowed developers to manage content within a Git repository, leveraging the advantages of version control, collaborative editing, and a streamlined deployment process.

Netlify CMS quickly gained popularity due to its ease of use and flexibility, enabling developers to build static websites while offering content editors a user-friendly interface. It was one of the first CMS solutions tailored specifically for static sites, filling a gap in the growing Jamstack ecosystem.

In 2023, the project underwent a significant rebranding and became Decap CMS, which is maintained and developed by PM TechHub.[2] The company generates funds by selling support services and additional features that are not in the open-source edition. This rebranding was driven by the desire to establish a clearer identity separate from the Netlify brand, reflecting the CMS's broader use beyond just Netlify's ecosystem. The rebranding also aimed to highlight the independence of the project, as it continued to evolve with contributions from a diverse community of developers.

Despite the name change, Decap CMS remains committed to its original mission of providing a flexible, Git-based content management experience. The rebranding has also led to increased visibility and adoption, as Decap CMS positions itself as a leading solution for managing content in modern web development workflows.[3]
