Malhi is a Hindu community found in the Tharparkar District of Sindh, Pakistan. They are part of the region’s Scheduled Castes and are considered among the Dalit population.

Community

[edit]

The Sindhi Hindu Malhi traditionally engage in agriculture, herding, and manual labor. They mainly live in rural areas of Tharparkar and speak local dialects of Sindhi and Thari. The Malhi community, like other Scheduled Castes in Pakistan, faces longstanding social discrimination and economic challenges.[1]

Social and Political Status

[edit]

Malhis belong to the most marginalized sections of Pakistani society. Despite this, the community has seen increasing political representation in recent years, especially in Tharparkar, where they form a significant portion of the Hindu population.

Mahesh Kumar Malani, a prominent leader from the Malhi community, made history as the first Hindu to win a general seat in Pakistan’s National Assembly (NA-222 Tharparkar-II) in 2018, symbolizing greater inclusion of lower-caste Hindus in Pakistani politics.[2]

Challenges

[edit]

Despite political gains, the Malhi community still faces issues including:

  • Lack of access to education and healthcare
  • Social discrimination based on caste
  • Economic marginalization and limited land ownership
  • Vulnerability to exploitation in rural labor markets
