Preseason testing

[edit]

Formula One conducted three four-day testing sessions in Spain before the opening round of the season. The first test was held in at the Circuito de Jerez from 1 February to 4 February, while the second and third sessions were conducted at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from 19 February to 22 February and 26 February to 1 March. Caterham did not participate as they dealt with internal fiscal woes, while Manor focused on building their 2015 chassis around a 2014 power unit in lieu of testing. Force India did not complete their car on time, so they ran the first two session using their 2014 chassis.

Jerez

[edit]

Vettel topped the times on the first two days of testing with Ferrari, while newcomer Nasr was fastest on the third day in the Sauber. The final day of testing saw Räikkönen of Ferrari set the fastest time of the entire session at 1:20.841, nearly 2.5 seconds quicker than the fastest time set at Jerez a year ago. McLaren struggled, having only completed 21 laps over the entire session after running into problems with their new Honda power unit. Mercedes completed over 500 laps, easily the longest distance covered by one team over the session.[1][2][3][4]

Barcelona

[edit]

Preseason testing returned to Barcelona after a one year hiatus when Formula One conducted their second and third tests at the Bahrain International Circuit in 2014.

19 February – 22 February

[edit]

The new Mercedes-powered Lotus showed their improvement by topping the times three out of the four days of testing, with Grosjean setting the fastest time of the session with a 1:24.064 on the final day, over a second faster than the pole position qualifying time at the Grand Prix held at the circuit last year. Ricciardo of Red Bull set the top time on day two, while Maldonado was quickest on days one and three. Hamilton fell ill early in day one, which saw test driver Pascal Wehrlein test for Force India in the morning and for Mercedes in the afternoon. Alonso suffered a heavy crash on day four, putting a premature end to the session for McLaren. He was airlifted to a local hospital and, although held for three nights for a concussion, escaped major injury.[5][6][7][8]

26 February – 1 March

[edit]

Alonso sat out the third session as he recovered from his concussion. ((name)) posted a top time of 1:23.500 on day one, nearly a second faster than any other driver.
