ALLYSON FELIX (Los Angeles Baptist, CA) at Norwalk, CA, 6-7, 2003 THE NEXT BIG THING? Quickly becoming a phenomenon in the track and field community, Allyson Felix (right) of Los Angeles Baptist, CA, broke into the Record Book with a national record in the 200-meter dash. Her time of :22.52 eclipsed fellow Californian and running legend Marion Jones time of :22.67. She went on to earn silver medals in the 200-meter dash in both the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic Games. 400-Meter Dash

In that time, the Bearcats won 86 consecutive meets (all invitationals and state meets) and defeated 830 teams in the process. One of the keys to the program's success is that with a school enrollment of 1,400 students, the team generally has between 130 and 140 members. Under the direction of head coach Roger Mathiesen (front row, far right), Kearney set the state track meet scoring record of 111 points in 1996 and broke it the following year with 113 points. Bradshaw, of Shreveport Woodlawn, LA, threw the javelin 244-11 in 1966 to set what then was a national record and later became quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nehemiah, of Scotch Plains Fanwood, NJ, is the 120-yard high hurdles record-holder with a time of :12.9 in 1977. He went on to be a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, the team where Carter played nose tackle. At Dallas Jefferson, TX, Carter set the shot put record with a 77-0 heave in 1979. Francis, of Pleasant Hill, OR, like Bradshaw, once held the javelin record with a toss of 254-11 in 1971 and later became a New England Patriots tight end. Jesse Owens (left), who later gained worldwide fame as an Olympic sprinter, first gained national prominence as a high school track and field standout. Owens, of Cleveland East Technical, OH, once held three national records, including the 100-yard dash with a time of :9.4 in 1933 a mark that stood alone for 21 years before it was tied in 1954. Owens would go on to showcase his athletic skills in memorable gold-medal winning performances at the 1936 Olym pics in Germany. In 1983, Owens was in ducted into the National High School Hall of Fame. TRACK LEGEND 2010 Honor Roll 1. Jeramy Elkaim (Livingston, NJ) .................................................8:46.08 2. Interestingly, Eshbach broke his own national record, as he cleared 17-93/4 just a month earlier at the Texas UIL District 23-3A track championships to eclipse the 17-9½ standard set by Joe Dial of Marlow, OK, in 1981. That same day, Eshbachs teammate, Johnathan Henley, vaulted a personal- best 17-3, which was the third-best performance of 1999 behind Eshbach. Coaching Eshbach, Henley and several other pole vaulters to similar heights of glory at Orangefield High School for several seasons has been coach Joe Hester (left in photo at left). 2010 Honor Roll 1. The Oregon standout established the nation al high school boys record in the two-mile run with a time of 8:41.50 in 1969. Prefontaine later became a member of the United States Olympic team that competed in the 1972 Olympics in Mun - ich, Germany. During his car eer, Prefontaine established several American records in events above 2,000 meters. However, in May 1975, a tragic fatal automobile accident in Eugene, Oregon, ended the aspiring career of this long-distance runner. In 1997 and 1998, Prefontaines life story was brought to the silver screen in two movies, Prefontaine, and Without Limits, with Jared Leto and Billy Crudup, respectively, playing the title role. In 2000, Prefontaine was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame. TERRIFIC TEXANS The Houston Eisenhower, TX, 4x200-meter relay team set a national record in 2006 by covering the track in 1:24.10 (now ranks fourth). Randy Johnson, Otis Johnson, Frank Eugene and Brandon Myers (Myers shown right) beat the previous mark set by Port Arthur Memorial, TX, in 2003 by .02 seconds. 2010 Honor Roll 1.
