Joseph Robert Hawley (born September 23, 1982) is an American songwriter, producer and recording artist. He is the Guitarist, Vocalist and writer of the indie rock band Tally Hall.[1] Hawley has worked with several artists including Madi Diaz, Shane Maux, Charlene Kaye, Casey Shea, Lauren Stickley, Coz Baldwin and Sam Falik.

Early life

[edit]

Hawley is a native of Bloomington Hills, Michigan. Joe Hawley went to Hickory Grove Elementary School and did well, even earning himself a Student of The Week certificate in 1988. Joe then attended Middle School in 1994, He attended Lahser High School, overlapping in his time there with Ross Federman, Future Drummer of Tally Hall in 1997. In 2001, Joe attended the University of Michigan, where he studied screenwriting. His senior thesis was a short film entitled The Other Way.[1]

He was a film/English double major at the University of Michigan, and graduated in 2005. While at college, he formed the comedy troupe anonyMous and produced the feature film Sargasm, from which many of Tally Hall's early videos were taken.

Tally Hall(2002-2011)

[edit]

In 2002, Hawley joined Michigan-based band named Tally Hall with Rob Cantor and Zubin Sedghi. Hawley performed as guitarist, writer and vocalist in the band until the band went on hiatus in 2011.

In March of 2010, Joe was not present for the tour with Jukebox The Ghost and Skybox. Casey Shea filled in for Joe (vocals and guitar), whilst wearing a black necktie. The band told the crowds that, due to unforeseen circumstances, Joe had to back out of the tour at the last minute, but nothing was said after. Curiously, in the months leading up to this surprise, Joe cleared out his Twitter posts and deleted (or well-hid) his Facebook page. The March tour went on, and more questions arose than answers. It was discovered that Joe was in fine health, but no one provided a clear explanation on his absence. Months went by, and in September of 2010, a show at Denison University occurred with Casey Shea in lieu of Joe, once again. This controversy began feeding the anger amongst fans who were already riled up over the delayed release of Good & Evil, which had its ETA pushed back multiple times.October 2010 brought more curious changes to the as-yet-untold story of Joe Hawley and his involvement with the band. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee. The short story there was that his lease was up in Brooklyn, and a friend of his was moving to Nashville and invited Joe to stay with him. A few months later, he moved back to Michigan, where he currently resides.

Joe, officially, addressed his "disappearance" on Tally Hall's June 15 Ustream, over a year after his original disappearance occurred. "My personal life and my professional life intersected in a way that may have been considered unsavory," he explained. "Given that conflict, I was unable to tour." No band members have given a further explanation to this statement.

Post Tally Hall

[edit]

Shortly after Tally Hall's hiatus, Joe has created multiple albums either through his musical project, ミラクルミュージカル or under his own name.

[edit]

Joe created the musical project, ミラクルミュージカル, AKA: Miracle Musical, spearheading the project and collaborating with fellow Tally Hall members, and producer Bora Karaca to create a full-length LP entitled: Hawaii: Part II, which was released on the 12th of December, 2012. Labyrinth was also promoted with a PC based video game which went by the same name, made by Wonderfling Studios. A day later on December 14th, 2014, an an audio-only cover of Candle On The Water was uploaded to their official YouTube page[8] and Soundcloud.[9] The track was dedicated to the memory of Diem Brown and Trevelyn Grace Campbell, fans of Tally Hall. On June 4th, 2015, ミラクルミュージカル uploaded a lyric video of The Mind Electric to YouTube.[10] Two dates later, on June 6th 2015, ミラクルミュージカル uploaded a video of what appears to be Ross Federman recording the drums to Black Rainbows onto their official facebook page saying " HAPPY 6.9.15「A.K.A. "BLACK RAINBOWS" SING-ALONG DAY」"[11]

On September 13th, 2015, an update was made to the Labyrinth video game, allowing for users to play the game on Mac OS X[12] As of 5th Dec, 2018, the game has been taken off the wonderfling website[13]

On December 31st, 2015, ミラクルミュージカル released "Hawaii Partii" on Bandcamp, an album of nine 8-bit renditions of songs from Hawaii: Part II, which were also used as the soundtrack to the Wonderfling Labyrinth video game[14]
