Background

[edit]

Cavazos was born and raised in Weslaco, Texas and graduated from Weslaco High School. His father was a public servant spending time as Justice of the Peace and as a County Commissioner of Hidalgo County. [2] He is also a direct decendant of Jose Narciso Cavazos grantee of the largest Spanish land grant, San Juan de Carricitos. Part of that land would eventually become King Ranch.

Career

[edit]

Cavazos began his career when he was attending UT Austin by working for former Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen and former Texas house representative Irma Rangel.[3] He then moved to San Antonio, spending time serving as City Manager for the suburb of Helotes.

His first exposure to work with chambers came in 1987, when he was appointed as Executive Director of the San Antonio Mexican Chamber, with one of his first actions changing the name to its current name as the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC). [4]

He then moved into the political space serving as the campaign manager for then councilman Nelson Wolff's successful 1991 bid for mayor. He subsequently ran his own campaign for city council, eventually losing in the runoff. Afterwards he pivoted to independent consulting with clients like HEB, AT&T and others before him assuming the position of Director of Global Public Affairs at Levi Strauss and Co.[5]

In 2000 Cavazos departed Levi's to assume the role of Director of Economic Development for the city of San Antonio. He served under three mayors coordinating large projects including the creation of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, bringing production of Tundra and Tacoma trucks to the South Side of San Antonio. He left this role in 2006 to work for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

In 2008 he returned to the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber assuming the role of President and CEO. During his second tenure with the chamber he led the chamber's achievement of 5 Star Accreditation by the United States Chamber of Commerce. He also continued to refine and expand the chamber's signature programs like the Latina Leadership Institute, the Alexander Briseño Leadership Development Program and the youth-focused CORE 4 STEM program.[6]

USHCC

[edit]

On August 31st, 2018 a board memo was pubished that announced Cavazos would leave the chamber later that year to become the President and CEO of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC).[7] He would officialy confirm this information on September 6th in an interview with the Rio Grande Valley Guardian saying in part, "I am grateful to the Board of Directors for selecting me to lead the USHCC, an organization that I have admired and supported for many years." [8] He worked to rebuild and strengthen the USHCC. [9] He guided the chamber through the pandemic and launched the chamber's Energy Summit expanding the chamber's programming options. He continues to rebuild and strengthen the chamber's standing having led it through two presidents and three administrations.
