From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nippon Shin Eisei is a biotechnology company in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture,Japan, specializing in agrobiology, genetic research and "new drugs". It has approximately 80 employees.[1]

NSE was founded in 1998 by Masa Tatenuma. Its early efforts included research on automated methods to select agricultural genes more susceptible to genetic mutation due to environmental factors. This work was in turn based on earlier work being conducted in Japan by one of the company's principle technicians.[2] In mid-2002, however, NSE withdrew several articles submitted for peer review and ceased any form of public announcement of new projects or goals. [3]

In 2009, NSE's public persona returned with the announcement of its forthcoming "More Than Me" product, which appears to be some sort product similar to the creation of a designer baby. The company's website indicates that prospective parents may be able to use NSE technology to alter the genomes of their offspring. If true, it is difficult to predict what kind of reaction the public and medical communities may have to such an offering.
