Vine Linux (ヴァイン・リナックス, Vain Rinakkusu) is a Japanese, Red Hat Linux based Linux distribution, sponsored by VineCaves. The project began development in 1998 by a member of the JPE. It remained a fork of Red Hat Linux since version 3.0, and has a development version called VineSeed. Each Version release is named after a particular type of wine. Additionally it does not follow the Linux Standard Base structure. With the exception of VineSeed all development on Vine Linux has been concluded, since May 4,2021.
Features
[edit]In the first half of the 1990s there were no Japanese Linux distribution available. But Vine Linux was the first Japan based developed version. Around 2001 Japanese input was important to users and quickly became a common desired feature. But Linux had been wide spread with distributions such as Fedora and Ubuntu due to being very beginner friendly they gained widespread use.
Thus Project Vine was created to be focused on making an OS for everyone.
Included by default were Emacs, Japanese Latex and programming enthronements (such as GCC) and a Japanese manual for the JM project were special features. It also had the VL gothic font as well.
Support
[edit]The Vine Linux Security watch team handle issues related to security. As a general rule the next major release will offer patches to issues once a year.
For minor versions, large changes aren’t made in order for the major release versions to target main issues.
