Article Evaluation
[edit]The content of the “Salt dome” article is topical, and the information does not seem to be particularly out of date. However, there is a completely empty external links section. Additionally, the introduction does not clearly explain to an unfamiliar reader what a salt dome is, nor does it coherently describe and connect to the information presented in the rest of the article. For instance, the term “stratigraphic trap” is used in the introduction, but is not mentioned in the rest of the article. The article is rather unclear overall. The writing is not very well-organized, and there is an excessive use of unexplained jargon. While the article does link to other Wikipedia pages, many of those links are red; more specifically, they link to Wikipedia pages that do not exist.
The tone of the article is neutral. None of the claims appear to be particularly biased towards a specific viewpoint.
With regards to the sources, many facts in this article are missing citations. Although there is only one paragraph clearly marked with a “Citation Needed”, there are multiple portions of the article to which this applies. For the portions that are sourced, the information comes from different journal articles and reputable websites. However, links are only provided for some of these references. The link in the ninth reference as well as the first link in the fourth citation does not work. The link in the eighth reference leads to the overall website for the Encyclopedia for Earth and not the specific entry referenced.
“Salt dome” is part of the WikiProjects for Geology and Mining. In both projects, it was assigned “Start-Class” on the quality scale and “Mid-Importance” on the importance scale. Inside the talk page, one user asked for more clarification on the “unsourced” tag and one of the figures was nominated for deletion due to plagiarism. In addition, another user proposed the name of the article be changed to “salt diapir” for more comprehensiveness, and there was some discussion about the accuracy and precision of the article.
