Blackrock Chess Academy

Blackrock Chess Academy is a chess academy based in Saulsville,Pretoria in South Africa. It was founded by Tshiamo Matlala on 30 September 2025 with the mission of promoting chess education, organizing local tournaments, and developing young talent within the community.[1]

  • Spectators: More than 300 passersby stopped to watch, with many praising the event for reminding them of their younger days.
  • Impact: Inspired new registrations and helped establish the academy’s reputation in the community.

2ND BLACKROCK CHESS ACADEMY TOURNAMENT

Date: 10 October 2025 (World Mental Health Day)

Venue: Mbolekwa Sports Ground

The Blackrock Chess Academy successfully hosted a chess tournament featuring 30 competitive players, with an additional 15+ players taking part in friendly matches between rounds. The event was part of the World Mental Health Day celebrations, emphasizing how chess supports focus, discipline, and mental wellness.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

Players competed in a 4-round Swiss system to determine the top performers.

The top 10 players, each scoring 3 and 4 points, qualified for the knockout stage.

In the knockout rounds, each player was allocated 15 minutes, making it 30 minutes per game — ensuring balanced, exciting, and time-managed matchups that tested both strategy and composure under pressure.

COMMUNITY & SUPPORT

The event was proudly supported by:

ASSREC, City of Tshwane, SPAR atteridgeville, #MindThePlug, Tshwane FM, Tshwane Sports Council, Isolihle (Mental Wellness Hub), ATTSAU, Gauteng Province Health (Republic of South Africa), Are Dlale Safe for Zero, and Tshwane Youth Sector, along with other sporting disciplines who joined in the celebration of sports and wellness.

HIGHLIGHTS
