Steven Glaser (born 23 January 1969) is a British environmental technology advocate and event organiser, known for his work in hydrogen and fuel cell technology. He has contributed to sustainable transport initiatives in the United Kingdom and the European Union, and is the founder of the public engagement event known as the Eco-Rally.
Early life and education
[edit]Glaser was born in Wales. He studied physics at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1990, and later obtained a master's degree in energy engineering from London South Bank University in 1992. While at university, he was involved in environmental campaigns and student politics.
Career
[edit]Glaser began his career in the early 1990s, working with the Institute of Energy and as a parliamentary researcher for Peter Rost MP, a former vice-chair of the Combined Heat and Power Association. He later worked with the Association for the Conservation of Energy and the Energy Conservation and Solar Centre in London.
From the late 1990s, he was involved in hydrogen energy policy development and served as a European coordinator for the World Fuel Cell Council. He played a key role in the launch of the London Hydrogen Partnership at the Greater London Authority, helping to initiate hydrogen demonstration projects, including one of the UK’s first local authority-run hydrogen refuelling stations in the London Borough of Camden.
Glaser has provided policy and technical advice to organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the European Commission, and the International Energy Agency. He was awarded the Edwin Spreadbury Prize by the Institution of Incorporated Engineers in 1998 for his public outreach work in energy technology.
Eco-Rally
[edit]In 2007, Glaser founded the Eco-Rally, a public showcase event promoting sustainable transport technologies. The inaugural event ran from Brighton to London to coincide with United Nations World Environment Day. Subsequent rallies featured routes from Oxford to London, with participants including automotive companies and public figures.
The Eco-Rally aimed to raise public awareness of low-carbon transport options, featuring vehicles powered by hydrogen, electricity, biofuels, and hybrid systems. It ran until 2013 and was supported by organisations such as Transport for London and Bridgestone. Coverage appeared in national and international media.
Other work
[edit]Outside the energy sector, Glaser has worked in arts and cultural organisations. He was formerly administrative director of the Jasmin Vardimon Company and has collaborated with performance groups including the Bureau of Silly Ideas. He has also organised comedy events and briefly managed musical acts.
Personal life
[edit]Glaser’s grandfather, Ben Glaser, was a community leader in South Wales and reportedly corresponded with Albert Einstein. Steven Glaser is a STEM Ambassador and has been recognised as a Global Hydrogen Ambassador. He has two sons and resides in London.
