William Allan Hailes (9 June 1881 - 22 January 1949) was an Australian Surgeon.

Army Career

In 1915 Hailes was commissioned as a captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps of the First Australian Imperial Force. In November 2017 he won the Distinguished Service Order.

Medical Career

Hailes had an early medical interest in medicine and pediatrics before he was commissioned into the army. After the Armistice of World War I, he remained in London to receive his F.R.C.S in 1919. Shortly after that, he was appointed out-patient surgeon and clinical lecture of surgery to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He became an honorary surgeon in 1934. In 1936, he became the dean of the hospital clinical school. A year later, he became a lecturer in surgery.

In 1940 he was appointed consulting surgeon to the First Australian Imperial Force. He became the director of surgery in 1942 and was promoted to brigadier in 1944.

Personal Life

Hailes married Mary Maud Whitfield, a nursing sister, on March 29th, 1920. He was married at Malvern Presbyterian Church. He had three children, all daughters. He died of hypertensive cerebrovascular disease on January 22nd, 1949.
