In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer")[1] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement,[2] and as of December 2024, only 54 bowlers have taken 15 or more five-wicket hauls at international level in their cricketing careers.[3] Taijul Islam, a slow left-arm orthodox spinner, represents the Bangladesh national cricket team.[4] With 16 five-wicket hauls across all formats of international cricket, he ranks equal 41st in the all-time list, and second among his countrymen[3]

Taijul's first five-wicket haul came against the West Indies during the first Test of the 2014 away series; he took five wickets for 135 runs in the West Indies' first innings. He became the sixth Bangladeshi to take a five-wicket haul on debut. He ended the year with his best best figures against Zimbabwe during the first Test of the 2014/15 home series; where he took eight wickets for 39 runs. As of December 2024, it remains the best bowling figures for a Bangladeshi in test cricket.[5]

Taijul made his ODI debut in 2015, a year after his first Test appearance. He has taken one five-wicket haul in the format. His best figures in the format are five wickets for 28 runs against the West Indies in the third ODI of the 2022 away series.[6]
