- Volunteered at help desk:
- Connected a user who wanted to create diagrams from WikiData with someone who knows about the Graph extension.
- Connected a user who wanted to create infoboxes from WikiData with the WikiData group.
- Learned from Daniel Zahn about Gerrit; requested a Gerrit repo for the parliament diagram tool.
- Fixed a UI bug in the parliament diagram tool.
- Connected a user who needs to fix a broken tool with Gergő Tisza, and figured out the next steps for the developer to take.
- Helped a developer select the right license for a repository, and figured out the appropriate way to reference remixed data from Wiktionary.

- Helped a user decide on how to structure an update to a tool, and respond to a question about importing the repository on Gerrit.
Movement strategy
- Took part in discussion about draft strategic direction, giving input to team.
Wikimania
- Meeting with Anasuya, Ellie, Douglas and Siko about Wikimania theme and Wikimania planning
- Put in Phabricator request to change Wikimania site wiki logo
- Helped a new user to get a declined article up to the required standard; moved to main article space.

- New extension in development: Capiunto (on test-wiki)
- Automatic infoboxes concept by Wikidata team.
- Works in similar way to article-placeholder.
- Don't have to define templates.
- Will work on all WM wikis; don't have to maintain templates or LUA.
- Will be machine-readable and exportable. Can be augmented with semantic markup.
- Simple inclusion: {{#infobox}} parser function
- Config: sorted list of properties to be included.

Up to 2030:
- Africa has highest population growth.
- Chinese highest language; Spanish next.
- Hindi is underserved in Wikipedia in terms of Article count and Contributor numbers.
Jorge Vargas from Global Reach team:
- Listened to voices outside the movement as well in part of Movement Strategy work.
- Research in 1:1 interviews, research and WMF and affiliate-led events.
Current and potential users:
- Wanted to reach unconnected users. How do they find information?
What information do people want?
- They want information that "speaks to their local realities"
How do they get info?
- Not going to info websites and search engines
- using social media, infomediaries or other channels. Looking to trusted individuals, not institutions.
- Want real-time, visual information that supports social sharing and conversation.
- Go to places like Instagram for biographical info!
- They won't necessarily come to us.
- Traditional education systems are failing the people, so they look for alternatives.
What do people want us to be?
- Should become a source of knowledge, not just a destination.
- Do this by empowering and enabling learning, and being there where the people learn.
- People do send links to websites. Sometimes the title "chapter 2" sounds like a textbook, so it would be trusted. Wikipedia wasn't commonly shared.
- Note: potential users; not current users.
Wikimedia should be a leader for access to knowledge.
- People said "You need to be part of the affordability debate". Wikimedia is a missing voice there [Wikipedia zero?] From many experts (Academia, glam etc.)
- Should be a platform for learning; not just info website.
- Being a Wikipedian is centered around editing. Our readers are grateful, but there should be other roles around advocacy and awareness. Not everyone can be a good WP editor, but what other roles can they fill?
- Should be a platform for underserved audiences to access, create and preserve local knowledge.
- What about communities that only have oral tradition? How do we capture that knowledge?

- Attended unofficial Research Group meetup; Connected Aaron Halfaker via email to ZA language wiki communities to help develop tools to identify different types of new users, and to categorize new articles to support WikiProjects.

- Interview tomorrow.
- No central repository or Wikipedia citations.
- New project to host sources on Wikidata
- Would allow us to answer questions about the citations.
- Bibliographic properties aren't all properly structured (e.g. using author name string instead of reference to author).
- All sources using PubMed or PMC IDs are now in wikidata.
- We have 3.3 million citation links using the cites property (P2860)
- We have, for example, a complete corpus of articles about the zika virus.
- Initiative for Open Citations: putting info about who cites whom under CC0
- Want to get all citation types together.
- Share this: m:WikiCite @WikiCite wikicite-discuss mailing list.
- Possible on small scale already, but not mature yet. Data models are only present for a limited subset of the current use.
- Incomplete at the moment, and mostly in English.
- Start experimenting right now. Check out for example. They have bibliographie|Qxxxxxxx
- enwiki has Template:Cite_Q as a proof of concept.
- Mined Wikipedia to get a list of most popular citations. What do they actually mean?
- Still some gaps in the coverage, although some will not be notable.
- For citations which don't have a template, rather use WikiData.

- Cool demonstration of WikiData use on WikiVoyage
- OTRS - I should probably volunteer! Maybe after 100 wikidays?
- Attribution generator tool; pretty cool.
- Open data talk from WM Sweden - good lobbying strategies.
- Million+ in Estonian Wikipedia. Not sure how well this can fit with African issues - quite tech-heavy.
- Mobile Wikivoyage: concept design for useful popups, but needs devs.
- Verifiability vs truth: Approximate numbers and conversions.
- Pibox installer: Raspberry pi as Kiwix (and other content) delivery device for areas with high risk of internet disconnection. No smooth update option; need to upload from scratch each time.
- Political articles in elections. Somewhat unfocused talk.
- Wikidata on Google Spreadsheets! AWESOME!!!! Grab ORES scores for lists of articles!
- Presented Wikipedia globe in 1 minute.
Coolest projects
- Bangladesh editathon: 70% of new articles became featured articles!!
- Medical translation task force: Key to translation is that you must start with high quality content!
- Museum of vet anatomy GLAM project was very successful and got a lot of press. Expanding to 60 other institutions.
- Swiss Archive Day was very successful: trained archivists, and now many want to take part in the movement.
- Paolo Monti on OSM: 16.9k pictures by Paolo Monti released on Commons and georeferenced.
- Videos from Israeli News agency uploaded under free license: normally licensed for thousands of dollars.
- First WLM in Bangladesh: created partnership with Archeological institution. Some of these pictures were the last chance to see the monuments due to degradation.
- Wiki Love Public Spaces: Freedom of Panorama now in law.
- Wiki Takes La Manchuela:
- it was not represented on the wiki
- 350 images being used in articles. 106 articles created
- Did it despite the local government saying no!
- Important to involve local people
- WM Israel educational photography contest.
- Focus on quality, diversity and encyclopedic value.
- Gallery afterwards with QR code pointing at article.
- Not everyone can write well, but find that thing that they do well and use it.
- Panel discussion:
- Keep things simple. Tell a stranger, and if they don't get it, work on the concept and make it even more simple.
- Before starting, try writing the press release headline. Can you say it in one sentence?
- To reach the press and the public: Start with a problem that needs a solution, or a hot topic, or something that's never been done before.
- Ask your GLAM partners whether they want to work with you on PR.
- Use statistics like "only x% of Wikipedia editors are female".
