In 1991, he founded Couple.net, the first matchmaking company in South Korea, and came up with the term ‘couple manager’ which is a new term to describe a matchmaker. He is a pioneer in the matchmaking industry who first came up with the basic concept of matchmaking service companies. Since then, this concept has been used amongst other matchmaking companies until now. Over 32 years, he had helped over 40,000 pairs to date or marry so he is known as the ‘matchmaking god’.
He is still the CEO of an online matchmaking company Couple.net and the CEO of a travel dating company Tour.com. He acquired seven matchmaking-related technology patents, including the ‘Ideal Partner Matching and Matchmaking System’ (2003) and personality matching (2008) etc.
His innovative achievement in providing a high-quality service at a reasonable cost made matchmaking service more approachable to a wider range of people, which laid the foundation for popularizing matchmaking services.
In 2001, he has relocated Couple.net’s head office to the United States extending its service to singles in the US. Couple.net is a global matchmaking company that helps single men and women around the world to find their perfect matches. Couple.net's matchmaking system can simultaneously match millions or tens of millions of single men and women around the world on a 1:1 basis.
CEO Lee Woong-Jin made all his employees work from home which was a sensational change from the stereotype of existing matchmaking companies. By doing so, the company reduced its overhead costs resulting in providing high quality service at a reasonable cost.
WoongJin developed a ‘spouse index’, which reflects key factors that affects marriage of men and women created by quantifying a large amount of data from the members.
The spouse index is a standard for matching men and women with the most compatible partners by indexing the socio-economic ability (occupation, education, financial power), physical attractiveness (height, impression, etc.), and family background (parents’ occupation, financial power).
In 2011, the spouse index of Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Commander of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the time, and his wife Ri Sol-ju was published and reported by a well-known media. In 2020, a survey comparing the attractiveness of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, then presidential candidates in the United States, was also conducted.
Couple.net with its unique matchmaking system, K-Matching, has expanded its service areas to worldwide by making its website more global friendly, establishing branches around the world including in the United States, Korea, Canada, Japan, Singapore, China, Australia, the United Kingdom, etc.
In addition, it has parted away from the traditional prepaid annual fee system of the existing matchmaking companies and switched to a postpaid service where you pay only when a meeting is arranged.
Besides the membership fee, which varies depending on the tier of the membership, a $50 fee for meeting in person through Self Searching or a couple manager will be paid when the meeting is arranged.
