Karen Emmorey studies how normal hearing and deaf individuals understand sign language and how it is processed through the brain. Her research focuses on sign language and how it represents the human language, cognitive processes and the brain functions of individuals. She investigates how sign language impacts face processing, mental imagery and memory. She collects data from fMRI and PET scans to see if there is correlation with deafness and normal hearing with sign language and cognitive functioning. Presently she holds the position of the Director of the Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience and is also apart of the Executive Committee at the Center for Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience.
