Collin Curtis
[edit]Collin Curtis is an American producer, writer, director, and filmmaker known for his work in independent cinema. He is also recognized for his entrepreneurial vision in commercial and luxury real estate development. His career spans business, filmmaking, youth mentorship, and community engagement.
Early Life & Education
[edit]Curtis was born on March 22, 1969 in Dallas, Texas. He attended Highland Park High School before graduating from the University of Southern California (USC) with a degree in International Relations. He later earned a Master’s degree in Film Production from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. In addition to his work in film, he also became a Senior Programs Manager for Werner Erhard’s Landmark Education, a global development company. His early exposure to film, storytelling, and leadership training laid the foundation for a career in filmmaking and entrepreneurship.
Filmmaking Career
[edit]In 1995, Curtis made his directorial debut with the short film WAVEMAKER, a coming-of-age romance that received international recognition at more than a dozen film festivals including Outfest LA,[1] elevating his profile in independent cinema. Building on this success, he founded Wavemaker Films, where he co-wrote, directed, and produced independent features such as ZULCH (1997), a first feature film, CATFISH AIRPORT (1998), and WHERE THE RED BUDS GROW (1999). His films have been recognized for their exploration of complex themes and intricate storytelling.
Curtis has drawn inspiration from a group of notable filmmakers that include Martin Jurow (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Robert Wise (The Sound of Music), and Randal Kleiser (Grease) who have helped to influence Curtis’ style and approach to filmmaking. Curtis was also a personal assistant to Brad Krevoy (When Calls the Heart) at Motion Picture Corporation of America.
In 2015, Curtis partnered with his father, Dr. Steve Curtis, a retired orthopedic surgeon, screenwriter, and fiction novelist, to develop screenplays and novels focusing on themes of love, redemption, and human resilience. Through his production company, Caravanserai Pictures, Curtis wants to create films that emphasize the transformative power of storytelling. Caravanserai Pictures is dedicated to developing projects that highlight diverse perspectives and narratives.
Real Estate & Business Ventures
[edit]In addition to filmmaking, Curtis expanded into luxury real estate, founding firms specializing in restoring historic properties and developing lifestyle estates across the Western United States. His approach integrates market insight, sustainable development, and architectural integrity. With a background in contract law, negotiations, and team leadership, Curtis has contributed to urban and rural property development while maintaining the components of sustainability and design.
Philanthropy and Mentorship
[edit]Curtis has served on multiple boards including the Turtle Creek Chorale in Dallas, Youth First Texas, and the Whidbey Island County Historical Society[2]. He was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Whidbey Westside[3] and served as the 2012-2013 Rotary District 5050 INTERACT Chair committed to mentoring youth and teen leadership. Curtis has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for neglected children in the state of Texas and has dedicated himself to supporting and empowering young people.
