Alex McMurray is a singer/songwriter based in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Alex performs solo, with his band, and in several other musical projects, including The Tin Men, 007, Jonathan Frielich, and most recently, The Smothered Brothers.  He has recorded seven albums under his own name. His songs have been recorded and performed by many artists, including The Iguanas, Susan Cowsill, and Paul Sanchez. His “ keen, poetic and often blackly funny songs have been a mainstay of the New Orleans songwriting scene since those halcyon days of last millennium” according to NOLA.com[1]

McMurray was born in Red Hook, New Jersey on December 22, 1968[2]. His mother died when he was a teenager. Neither of his parents were musical (He refers to his mother as being “famously tone deaf[2]), McMurray started playing guitar in various home town bands in his teens, in the early 80’s, after buying a guitar from his cousin for $30.

Alex was accepted to Tulane University in New Orleans, and enrolled there in 1987 intending to be a physics major. He continued his pursuit of music while in college forming a band that included Glenn Hartman on piano[3]. Alex also played in funk/dance bands, and as a substitute guitarist for groups performing in the bars of Bourbon Street.

As he started writing more songs, he moved away from dance music and started writing “songs that you would sit down to”.  This led him to form a band called Royal Fingerbowl[4], who recorded their first album “Happy Birthday Sabo” in 1997.

After Royal Fingerbowl folded, McMurray struck out on his own. He took a break from New Orleans in 2002 spending six months performing sea shanties as "Cap'n Sandy" at Tokyo DisneySea, an experience he describes as being "the lonliest time of my life[5]". His first solo album “Banjaxed” was released in 2004. This was followed in “How to be a Cannon Ball” in 2009. Alex continues to perform in and around New Orleans worth The Alex McMurray Band, as a solo artist, and a  member of The Tin Men, 007, and The Write Brothers.

His songs are sometimes sad, but McMurray feels that “Like Blanche DuBois in Streetcar,” he says, “I find sorrow to be quite a beautiful emotion. Loneliness can be nice.”[6] In a review of his 2020 album "Road Songs", Offbeat Magazine said "A good songwriter writes good songs. A great songwriter writes overarching poetic narratives. The songwriter as lyric poet doesn’t just turn out albums or mixes, they weave myths that touch our collective soul and seem at once personal and in synch with the human zeitgeist. Alex McMurray is such a writer..."[7]

Alex portrayed himself in two episodes of the HBO series "Tremé[8]".

McMurray is married to graphic artist and photographer Kourtney Keller[9].

His awards include the 2020 Offbeat Magazine Best Country/Folk/Singer-Songwriter Artist and Album and awards for his 2020 release "Lucky One[10]", a 2014 Big Easy award for best Roots Rock artist and 2010 Big Easy award for Album of the Year. He has played Jazzfest[11] every year since 1996.

Alex continues to perform in the New Orleans area and elsewhere.
