Santali cinema has its presence in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa , Assam, parts of Nepal ,Jhapa District &Morang District, where the Santhal people live. Santali is the language on which Santali films are made.
History
[edit]Although least initiatives have been taken to support Santali cinema,[1] [2] [3]allowing it to prosper, only three films till date have managed to made it to the big screen. "Chando Likhon"[4] [5] [6] [7] which released in the year 2001, was the first film to be made on 35 mm, second on this series was "Sagun Ena Sohag Dular" (2003),[8] the story of which was loosely the same as of the Bollywood film Nadiya Ke Paar. "Jewee Jurie"(Life Partner)(2009),[9] [10] produced by SBT Movie Craft was released widely in the states of Jharkhand, Orissa & other states.
Overview
[edit]Santali cinema has not been able to create an identity as a film industry like most other cinema's in India. Every year about 8 to 10 films are made, and are released directly, on CD's only. None of them are released on cinema halls, due to low budget & least support of state government in development of the cinema. Music albums are preferred over video films, as the budget is very low & prodution cost is easily recovered, & number of these ranges to 10 to 20 in number. Santali cinema has a good scope in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam & Orissa as the majority of its viewers reside in these regions.
Present Status
[edit]As there is no Film Development corporation in Jharkhand, Santali film industry is not on a remarkable position, & due to this, films & music albums are made less in number & distributed inefficiently, due to cost & other reasons.
Jharkhand, Dhanbad and its nearby areas does not even have proper cinema halls whose rates are very low compared to Multiplexes all over India. So releasing a film in cinema halls are not quite profitable.
Budget
[edit]To make a regional language film in celluloid, the costs would be around Rs 10 to 12 lakh whereas with a meagre budget of Rs 2 lakh, a digital mode film can be made. Not only that such a film can also be completed within a very short period as compared to celluloid cinema.[11] Also making a low budget film is reasonable as the cost can be easily recovered.
