The Oxford University Computer Society (or CompSoc) is a society created by students at the University of Oxford. Oxford University Compsoc was originally founded in 1978 under the name St John's College Microcomputer Society[1]. The Society underwent another name change in 1979 to become the Oxford University Microcomputer Society[1]
History
[edit]Originally founded in 1978, the St John's College Microcomputer Society aimed to:
- "provide an environment for college members to discuss, use and build microcomputers"[1]
At first, the society used early domestic computer systems such as the Commodore Pet, RML 380Z and a "home built" 6800 system.
In 1979, the society gained the name the Oxford University Microcomputer Society. The membership count also surpassed 100[1]. The society started to arrange talks on a variety of topics including:
- The Z80 instruction set
- The application of Microprocessors in the Film industry
- Semiconductor and Software processes
- Pinball design geometry
1980 marked the society's first major purchase, an Acorn Atom. The Society also soon after bought a BBC Model B.
