Pioneer Academics is a public benefit corporation that was the first to create a structured research mentorship program for high school students remotely. In order to enter the program, participants have to undergo a rigorous selection process. Most Pioneer students are juniors and seniors in secondary school, with a small minority being sophomores and freshmen [1]. Students accepted into the program are matched with an active researcher in their area of interest, regardless of how many miles or continents might be between them. Over the months of mentoring, students work with their mentors to craft a research project they can conduct from home. Roughly 30% of applicants worldwide are selected from this process, growing from 100 students in 20 different countries in 2014 to almost 528 students from 32 different countries in 2018 [2]. The 28 topics of research available range from subjects in the humanities, STEM, and social sciences. And Pioneer is the only online research program in the world to confer undergraduate coursework credits to students who complete the program [3].
