William Mackenzie & Co.

[edit]

William Mackenzie & Co. was a Scottish slave trading merchant house, based in Demerara. Two of partners William Mackenzie, and James Crawford Macleod (of Geanies, Ross- Shire) were based in Demerara, meanwhile George Baillie and John Jaffray were stationed in St Vincent.[1] [2]

Macleod and Mackenzie sold enslaved Africans in their Demerara sale room in the Cumingsburg district. These enslaved people were brought to the Caribbean by the slave trader George Baillie of St Vincent.

Mackenzie, Macleod and Baillie were from the Scottish Highlands. The firm also employed Donald Mackay, from Inverness, as a clerk from 1802 until the firm's failure, a result of George Baillie's bankruptcy in 1806.
