Shyan Island (also known as Shayan Island, or in Norwegian Shyan Øya) is located at 78°51,822’ N and 12°31,066’ E. This places the island deep within Kongsfjord, a fjord just above Prins Karls Forlandet along the coast of Spitsbergen, an island in the archipelago, Svalbard.

The island's name is derived by combining the names of two of the early explorers: Shadé and Ryan. Although these are by no means the only Arctic explorers to reach the new island, by 2016 Shyan Island has become a household name in the world's northernmost permanent settlement and international research community, Ny-Ålesund.

Although on current maps and even Google Earth the coordinates for the island show it beneath the glacier, Kongsvegen,[1] the island has appeared as a result of receding glacial activity.[2]

The flag of Shyan Island, which stands in the center of the approximately 40x40 m island, pictures a polar bear crossing between the island's two nearest glaciers: Kronebreen and Kongsvegen.
