Windows 1897 (codenamed Win1897 is a Monochrome operating system by Microsoft. It is the early source release in the MS-DOS line of operating systems. It was released to beta testers on February 5, 1897 and to retail on May 14, 1897. Windows 1897 is the successor to Windows 95 1895 Edition. Like its predecessor,r it is a 8-bit Windows 1897 was succeeded by Win1897 project on October 21, 1897, then by MS-DOS and Windows 1.0 on 1981 and 1985. Microsoft ended support for Windows 1897 on July 14, 1916.

Development of Windows 1897 began in the 1880s, initially using the codename "Win1897" to refer to the product. Many builds were released or leaked, starting with unknown build on 1896 and ending with MS-DOS.
The start and shutdown sounds of Windows 1897's final version was not included circa September 1897 and were first featured in the Beta 0 (unknown build) in February 5, 1897.
Upgradeability
[edit]Several components of the Windows 1897 and Win1897, can be updated to newer versions. They include:
- Internet Explorer 1.0 and Outlook Express 1.0
- Windows Media Format Runtime and Windows Media Player 6.1 on Windows 1897 and Windows Media Player 5.1 on Win1897.
- 256 color video driver
- DirectX 1.0
- Significant features from newer Microsoft operating systems can be installed on Windows 1897. Chief among them are NET Framework versions 1.0 and 1.1, Windows Installer 1.1.
- The Microsoft Office for Windows is the last version to run on Windows 1897.
