Introduction
[edit]Jason Brody is the protagonist of the 2012 video game Far Cry 3. He also briefly appears in the Far Cry 6 insanity dlc. His journey through Far Cry 3 shows him lose his sanity and presents him with multiple tough decisions. Originally from LA California[1], Jason and his friends got tricked into sky diving onto the Rook islands whilst on holiday. The Rook islands are a small collection of islands used by a group of pirates to capture and sell slaves. After landing the jump, they were captured by the pirates and spilt up. This is where he meets Vaas Montenegro the antagonist of the game. He slowly begins to love slaughtering pirates and causing major destruction. This has a major effect on his primary aim: to save his friends from slavery.

Portrayal
[edit]Jason is portrayed as a very generic-looking typical mid-twenties American man. This was done to make his descent into insanity more noticeable. Throughout all of his appearances, he wears a plain blue top and beige trousers which was originally met with a lot of criticism for being very generic. Years later, the writer of the story claimed that people had misinterpreted his character stating "If you half-listen to the story, it seems like it's reinforcing tropes that I disagree with."[2]
Throughout his time on the Rook islands it shows that he slowly loses interest in getting back to his normal life. His Transformation “From Being a Victim, to Being a Killer”[3] is a core part of the narrative. Although he becomes more and more heartless as the game progresses, it is still evident that he cares for his friends and family as he risks a lot to save his younger brother Riley.
Relationships
[edit]Grant Brody is Jason's older brother. He was asked by his father to accompany Jason on holiday because he is typically reckless and gets himself in trouble. He is also briefly seen in the introduction helping Jason escape from Vaas's makeshift prison. Whilst escaping, he gets shot in the neck and is assumed to be dead. Grant was asked by his father to accompany Jason on holiday because he is typically reckless and gets himself in trouble.[4]
Riley Brody is Jason's younger brother. He refers to him as his "kid brother" several times throughout the game. He is presumed dead until Jason is forced to torture him in the mission "all in". Prior to the events of Far Cry 3, he gets his pilot license which helps them escape the compound Riley was being held in.[5]
Liza Snow is Jason's girlfriend. Their relationship is shown as fickle and strenuous. She is portrayed as frustrated with Jason's lifestyle choices, focusing on parties and drugs. In the opening, Jason is shown as being a rather unsupportive partner.[6]
Citra Talugmai is the leader of the Rakyat and is the main love interest in Far Cry 3. The first time she meets Jason she dismisses him as an ignorant American tourist. To prove his worth, she sends him on a mission to retrieve the silver dagger (a special ritual dagger).[7] even though she knows this mission is most likely going to result in Jason's death. When he returns, Citra begins to manipulate Jason into becoming a Rakyat warrior. From this point onwards their relationship is driven by sexual tension. However Jason mistakes Citra's sexual interest as genuine even though she is just interested into the idea of a true Rakyat warrior.[8]
Appearances
[edit]Far Cry 3
[edit]Jason Brody appears as the protagonist in Far Cry 3. The game opens with a montage of Jason and his friends on holiday. The last clip shows all of them sky diving onto the Rook islands, the place where Vaas and his pirates collect and sell slaves.
It is soon revealed that Jason and his brother Grant have been captured by Vaas and trapped in a makeshift cage. Jason and his brother attempt to escape but Grant dies in the process. Jason narrowly avoids death by being saved by a native called Dennis.[9]
Dennis tattoos Jason's arm several times throughout the game which is used mechanically as a visual representation of a skill tree and represents Jasons' transformation into a Rakyat warrior in-game. After completing some missions for him, Jason then encounters the Rakyat tribe, a group of natives fighting against the pirates. He meets the leader of the tribe Citra Talugmai who manipulates Jason throughout the game into doing things for her convincing him he is turning into a true warrior. This is what begins to shift Jason's motive from saving his friends to mass destruction on the island.
Far Cry 4
[edit]Jason Brody is also very briefly mentioned in Far Cry 4. Willis (a character that appears in both titles) says to the playable character "Way better than the SoCal douchebag I had to babysit in my last op"[10] which is a reference to Jason's place of origin Los Angeles, California.
Far Cry 6
[edit]Jason briefly appears in the insanity DLC[11] as an antagonist. Vaas is the playable character in this DLC contrasting their positions from Far Cry 3. Jason torments Vaas through his journey to escape his own mind. He is seen replacing Vaas in some iconic Far Cry 3 cutscenes. He also appears as the heavy type enemy.
Reception
[edit]When Far Cry 3 was originally released Jason had a mixed reception at best with a user at the time saying "Jason Brody may be the most selfish character of 2012"[12]. He was also featured in gamerevolutions' 2019 article "Who is the worst video game character ever?"[13]. However, there were some sources that praised the character for being a lot more vocal and interesting than a lot of other protagonists at the time, stating that Jason Brody is " A new kind of protagonist for video games".[14] Although as time passed people had more time to analyse the game and Jason Brody more in-depth. Opinions of him started to change largely when the writer of the story Jeffrey Yohalem stated that he thought "critics aren't looking for meaning in the game"[15] This motivated critics and user alike to revisit and dig deeper.
