To add an archives and search box to any talk page, copy the code in the box below (from this page right here, not by going into edit mode) and insert it (as is with no changes) after the talk page headers (all the other stuff with curly brackets at the top of the edit box). Copy the entire thing, including the two opening brackets and the two final brackets.
This generates a searchable box with a list of archives similar to the one on the right.
Code to be copied and pasted:
{{subst:Setup auto archiving|archives=yes}}
After that, a bot will be along within the next day to start archiving. This should work even if there has already been a previous manual archive.
Why are some pages archived?
[edit]On Wikipedia, discussions are held on talk pages and notice boards. Over time, these pages can grow too large. To keep them readable, old discussions are moved to archives. This process is not automatic. Editors can move the discussions from a talk page or set the talk page up for a bot to do so, which is what the steps above accomplish. Help:Archiving a talk page offers a more complete understanding of archiving and instructions for multiple options.
Only noticeboards and talk pages are archived because both can become very long. The guidelines suggest archiving a talk page over 75 KB (or 75,000 bytes). They also suggest archiving resolved or stale discussions. You summarize older but relevant discussions with the {{FAQ}} template. Archiving one's own user talk page is advised but optional; some users simply blank the page.
