Biography

[edit]

Young was born in Charlottesville, Virginia but moved to Arlington, Virginia when she was three years old. After several more moves, including a move to Manhattan, New York City, Young’s family finally settled in Alexandria, Virginia, only a short distance from Washington DC. Young grew up in a divorced family and was influenced not only by her parents (Father who was a real estate agent, step-father who was a Christian Minister and a mother who worked at the Pentagon during the Reagan Administration), but was also influenced by the surrounding neighborhoods and schools she attended. Young attributes a lot of her musical influence to her Alma mater T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA, a predominantly minority dominated school where she graduated as the class President. Young started DJ’ing at 19 years old and started her professional DJ career 1992 at Hill Haven Nightclub in Washington DC.

Career

[edit]

In 1991 Young launched her career as a Hip-Hop radio DJ on WPGC 95.5FM in Washington, DC, while attending the University of Maryland. She was the DJ for Donnie Simpson’s morning show as well as the music director at WPGC before relocating to Miami in 1998 to work for Interscope Records. Soon after her move to Miami, Young met club impresario Ingrid Casares and landed a residency at Casares’ South Beach Liquid Night Club. Together they orchestrated parties for many artists including Sean Puffy Combs, Russell Simmons, Cher, Ricky Martin and The Smashing Pumpkins. It was at Liquid Night Club where Young met Madonna at the Millennium Eve Party in South Beach and landed a DJ gig for Madonna’s movie premiere of “The Next Best Thing”. From there the relationship blossomed and in 2000 Young was asked to DJ at the wedding for Madonna and Guy Ritchie in Scotland. Independently, Young has performed and produced events for The Emmy Awards, The Grammy Awards, Sundance Film Festival, Roberto Cavalli, Lincoln Automotive, BVLGARI, Gay Olympics with Liza Minelli, Kylie Minogue’s 2011’s US Tour Aphrodite, and Britney Spear’s 21st birthday. Tracy Young has appeared in MTV‘s House of Style, Sisqó’s Shakedown, BET’s Rap City, E!’s Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami, Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta, and LOGO’s the A List. A great deal of media attention was given to Young’s relationship with Kim Zolciak from The Real Housewives of Atlanta after the reality star stepped out into the public spotlight with her then girlfriend, and the two released Tracy Young’s remix for the Zolciak single “Tardy for the Party”. The relationship exposé was covered by the tabloid press including US weekly, The View, Chelsea Lately, Entertainment Tonight, The Soup, and Perez Hilton. DJ Tracy Young currently splits her time between Miami and New York where she holds a monthly residency at XL Nightclub located within the newly opened The Out Hotel in midtown Manhattan.
