Overview of graffiti

Graffiti is a form of visual communication that is displayed on a public space by a group or individual and is typically illegal.Graffiti commonly consists of symbols or phrases that is sprayed or painted on a wall or other public space by people who want to share their beliefs or gang information.It also can be used as a way for people to express their opinion on an issue publicly  and possible anonymously if they do not sign it. The different types of graffiti consist of tag, throw up, blockbuster, wild style, heaven, poster, stencil, sticker, and piece.

History of graffiti

The first drawings were found inside caves thousands of years ago, the Romans and the Greeks marked their names and poems on buildings. Graffiti was found in the 1960s in Philadelphia, however, it had a take-off in the 1970s in New York. It was known to be seen on the subway or on cars it was so out of hand it was impossible to see out of the windows. Street gangs who would mark their territory were called “taggers”, they did this in groups called “crews” and what they did was called “ writings.” Also, in the 1970s the mayor of New York had the first debate if graffiti as vandalism or art. By the 1980s it was difficult to write on subways without being caught. Although this debate is still going Peter Vallone, a New York city councilor believed if graffiti was done with permission it was art but if it was done on someone else's property it was a crime. He had a message for all the vandals “ Your freedom of expression ends where my property begins.” Graffiti has been asked to be put in cities because it symbolized freedom and made it more vibrant.

Questions to consider

Graffiti should be seen as a form of artwork instead of just a form of vandalism or defacement of the property since the artists can express themselves freely on a public scale. Graffitis a way for people to show the public how they are feeling or what they are thinking and should be seen and valued as much as a piece in a museum.

There is a difference between graffiti and commissioned art since one is artist is paid and the other isn’t. For commissioned artwork the artists are hired to paint on a given surface and most likely given a idea to portraying the wall.While Graffiti the artist is able to paint whatever they feel on any surface they find, but typically the graffiti artist stays to a particular theme so that they can be noticed and recognized more for their work.

Graffiti does have a place in society since some artists plan to target certain groups of people like politicians, feminists, or other groups of people who are viewed publicly.Society

Tagging is used primarily to mark gang territory so it is seen as defacement since there is no initial purpose or message trying to be portrayed
