Ateeq bin Dh'aen Al Muhairi

[edit]

Ateeq bin Dha'an Al Muhairi was a notable figure in Abu Dhabi, known for his contributions to the community and his role in the economic and social development of the region during a transformative period in the UAE’s history. Born into a prominent tribe in the Al Dhafra region, Ateeq grew up in Al Bateen, a coastal area of Abu Dhabi. Al Bateen was historically significant as a hub for fishing, pearling, and boat-building, industries that shaped the early economy of the emirate.

Life

[edit]

From a young age, Ateeq worked alongside his father and uncle in the pearling industry, a key livelihood for many in Abu Dhabi at the time. At the age of 17, Ateeq lost his younger brother, who had worked with him on the pearling ships. Despite this personal loss, Ateeq continued to develop his skills and eventually became a Noukhada (captain) for a short period, leading fishing expeditions and catching fish, which were used to produce dried, salted fish.

His early experiences at sea were not just confined to pearling; Ateeq also worked as a fisherman and participated in the gathering of oysters and pearls. His efforts reflected the challenging yet rewarding nature of life in Abu Dhabi before the discovery of oil. As a hardworking and disciplined young man, Ateeq was known for his commitment to both his profession and his faith. He performed daily prayers and prioritized his relationship with God, believing that his success came from divine guidance.

Ateeq’s career diversified beyond the sea. He briefly worked as a laborer and later as a foreman in a company. However, he left this position due to dissatisfaction, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Ateeq’s sharp business acumen led him to invest in the taxi business, and he eventually began buying and selling properties, which became a major source of wealth for him.

Ateeq had close ties with the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. His responsibilities included protecting areas and ensuring safety during times of transition. Under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, Ateeq’s fortunes grew as Abu Dhabi underwent rapid development. His real estate investments proved lucrative as the city expanded, and he capitalized on the growing demand for land and properties. This strategic foresight allowed him to transition from a seafaring life to one of a successful property owner and businessman.

Ateeq was also a poet, having composed many traditional verses. One of his most famous poems was written when he witnessed women preparing to leave Abu Dhabi on camels, reflecting the emotions of departure and separation.

In addition to his business ventures, Ateeq played an important social role in his community. He helped distribute essential goods during times of need and served as a point of contact between the government and the people, ensuring that the voices of the citizens were heard. He also witnessed and supported environmental reforms under Sheikh Zayed’s leadership, including the ban on hunting with firearms to protect the region’s wildlife.

Ateeq bin Dha'an Al Muhairi’s life is a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and vision of Abu Dhabi’s early citizens. His legacy as a businessman, community leader, and poet continues to be remembered.
