THE PLAY (Film 2013)

The Play is a murder mystery thriller where a famous theatre group headed by AmbikeshSanyal (Rajesh Sharma) in Kolkata is ravaged when the members of the group gets killed one by one in a span of one night. Only three of the members survive Mainak Indrasish Roy), Ishika (MumtazSorcar) and Rishabh (Rajdeep Gupta). The task of finding out the truth falls onMainak, but the answers he was looking for are not the answers he will get. Will the truth kill him or just make him even stronger. Find out as The Play begins.
Bibaksha is a famous theatre group led by a famous theatre personality Mr.AmbikeshSanyal(Rajesh Sharma). The theatre group consists of RanaDa(Neel Mukherjee), a trusted aide of Ambikesh and Ishika(MumtazSorcar), Rishabh(Rajdeep Gupta), Mainak Mukherjee(Indrasish Roy), Aanya(Sampurna), Debjit, Momo, Ratri.
Rishabh used to be the main lead of Bibaksha but due to an injury Mainak who is a new entrant into the group becomes the main male lead. One day after a rehearsal Raj (AnindyaChatterjee), ex-boyfriend of Aanya comes to the green room to find Mainak and Aanya together and unable to control his anger he points his gun towards him and threats the entire group of dire consequences for coming and stopping him from talking to Aanya. Raj is the son of an influential politician and uses his power to threat the entire group. With everyone scared and disturbed Rana Da comes and handles the entire situation by consoling Aanya but Aanya is looking for more than a mere consolation. As she is a wannabe model she wants to get into the glamour industry and asks for RanaDa’s help and says that she is willing top go down to any level to get established. Rana Da likes the offer and exposes his dark intentions towards Aanya. This conversation is overheard by Ratri.
In the meantime Ambikesh is not happy with the performance of the members and feels that the members of the groups are getting diverted towards other directions like modeling, films and just using this group as a platform rather than to learn something. Regarding this he also has a heated argument with Rishabh who gets an offer from a film but Ambikesh denies him to go and nobody dare denies Ambikesh. That’s how commanding he is towards his group. Ambikesh was to go outside for a couple of days for some work so the entire group plans a party on the rooftop of the workshop building.

Everyones enjoying the party when Rana Da says that he needs to leave for some work and asks them to enjoy the night before saying goodbye and Aanya also goes out after him. After a while Mainak goes down to find Aanya as she has not returned but to his shock he finds Aanya lying dead on a bench inside the workshop room. Everyone is shocked and bewildered not knowing what to do, and the blame points out to Raj but he is too influential to be in trouble and Ishika realizes that they will be the one to get into trouble. So Rishabh decides to dump the body along with Debjit and Momo. They leaves the workshop and heads to a deserted place. In the meantime in the workshop room Ratri reveals that Rana Da might also be involved as she heard him giving indecent proposals to Aanya and forcing her after the party. They all looks confused when Ishika gets a call from Rishabh. He says that Momo has gone missing after Debjit left for home and now a masked man is chasing him. According to Rishabhs location, Mainak and ishika heads towards an under construction building. There they find Rishabh in a very bad state and Rishabh tells them that the masked man maybe followed him to this place. Citing danger tey all prepare to escape when the masked man comes in front of Ishika and Rishabh pointing a gun towards them. Mainak jumps on him and hurts the masked man and they all escape the place. Suddenly Mainak gets a call from Ratri saying that she is scared and feels somebody is there in the workshop room and suddenly the phone disconnects. They reach the workshop room and finds Rana Da drunk and there is no sight of Ratri. Now the blame points towards Rana Da as the trio leaves the workshop. Rishabh and Ishika leaves but Mainak prefers to stay alone for some time and eventually decides to meet Ambikesh as he is scheduled to return that morning. Mainak narrates the entire story to Ambikesh. Ambikesh seemed very calm. Mainak finds Ambikesh limping and gets a little doubt as he has hurt the masked man the previous night. Ambikesh calls Ishika to the workshop room alone and leaves. Mainak gets confused and slowly starts to build up a doubt on Ambikesh and he finds some papers on his table which is a part of the script and the script looks entirely familiar to the incident that happened with them. He finds a piece of paper where the names of the members are struck off those who have died or gone missing and to his shock he finds Ishika next in the list and the gun case empty(Ambikesh had a licensed gun). Now he is sure Ambikesh is behind all these and he reaches the workshop room to find Ambikeshkilling Ishika. Seeing this Mainak takes out the gun from Ambikesh’s jacket and shoots him dead.
With Ambikesh down the story of tragedy, deception and hatred unfolds. Nobody died that night; it was just a smart plan of Ishika who wanted to teach Mainak a lesson for taking Rishabhs place in the group. They were just playing thing Mainak will get scared and run off forever. But they didn’t expect this to happen but they are very happy that it happened, although the murdering of Ambikesh was not the part of the plan. The part where Ambikesh was killing Ishika was just a part of the rehearsal that they were doing which Mainak misunderstood and shot Ambikesh. They pressurize Mainak to flee so that they can protect themselves from getting harmed. Mainak gets out not knowing what to do and eventually meets with a deadly accident. The doctors have declared that miracle can save his life. Ishika and Rishabh bids him final goodbye and after a prolonged time lapse Mainak opens his eyes. The boy will be back for answers.
