Gameplay

[edit]

Dragalia Lost is an action role-playing game with touchscreen controls, where characters attack enemies with simple and magic attacks of different elements which can be weaker or stronger than other ones. Another method of attack is a special attack where the character transforms into a dragon and can greatly damage the enemy for a moment when they have sufficient energy that can be collected while playing or destroying statues of dragons. The characters also have their own classes, with attacking and healing types being the primary ones. While the game is fully playable as a single-player experience, it also supports up to four-player co-operative multiplayer.[1]

Gameplay

[edit]

Dragalia Lost is an action role-playing game with touchscreen controls. Players control their character by swiping or holding to move and tapping to attack enemies. Enemies are automatically targeted when within range of the character, and attacking enemies charges the character's skills and dragon gauge. Continuously tapping allows the character to perform a basic attack combo loop. Quickly swiping in any direction will allow the character to perform a roll in that direction. Every character also has an unlock-able force strike, which can be charged and unleashed by holding and releasing, respectively.[2] Character skills can be activated by tapping the skill icon once it is fully charged. Tapping the dragon icon when it is sufficiently charged allows the character to shape-shift into a dragon for a short period of time, granting them stronger attacks and a strong skill. The dragon gauge is shared by all characters in the team, and can be filled quickly by breaking Dragon Obelisks.[3]

Characters are part of one of eight different classes, which varies by attack pattern, speed and range. They also have an element, which grants them a damage advantage when fighting against another element. Skills and effects of each character differs by character class, and can be upgraded. Players may create teams with up to four characters, and can switch between them during quests by tapping their portraits. Other characters in the team are AI-controlled when not under the player's control. Characters can equip one weapon and dragon, as well as up to two wyrmprints.[4] Wyrmprints give additional boosts and effects to the character it is equipped on.[5]

Characters, dragons, and wyrmprints can either be obtained from gachas by using Wyrmite or Diamantium, or from events. Wyrmite can be obtained for free from playing the game, while Diamantium can only be obtained through in-app purchases with real money. The chance of obtaining a high-rarity character/dragon/wyrmprint is much lower than obtaining ones of lower-rarity. Obtaining duplicate characters will grant eldwater instead, which can be used to upgrade and raise the rarity of already-obtained characters.[6] Characters from other Cygames also make an appearance in Dragalia Lost, with Lily being a playable character and Cerberus a playable dragon.

When embarking on a quest, players have the option to select a helper character to bring along with them. Bringing along a helper grants the player a one-time use of that character's first skill as well as some mana, which is used for upgrading characters. If the player brings a helper from a player they are friends with, the mana obtained is doubled and the amount of times the player can use that helper's skill is increased to three.

The boss of any quest has an overdrive gauge, which fills up and depletes as it is attacked. When fully filled, the boss enters overdrive mode, which can change its behavior, attacks, and power. After fully depleting the gauge, the boss will enter break mode, which renders it unable to move, attack, or charge its overdrive gauge for a short period of time.[7]

By progressing through the story quests, players can unlock challenging quests for materials as well as access to their castle. Besides going on quests, players can raise their dragons' affection by purchasing and gifting items to them, as well as manage their castle grounds. Within the available land of their "Halidom", players can place and upgrade structures that can either boost character stats or give items. Players may also upgrade their castle to increase the available land to place new structures, as well as the blacksmith to craft and enhance stronger weapons.

While the game is fully playable as a single-player experience, it also supports up to four-player co-operative multiplayer.[1] Playing quests solo consumes stamina, while playing co-op consumes getherwings. Both stamina and getherwings recover over time. Players can create public co-op rooms with three spaces which are automatically filled by other players looking to play the same quest at the same difficulty. Characters from the room creator's team are used as placeholders for missing players. The creator of the room may also set restrictions which will prevent players that do not fulfill those conditions from being able to find and join their room.[4] Players can also create private rooms which can joined by entering in the room code. While playing cooperatively, players can communicate by sending emote stamps to everyone.[8]
