In 2014 he contested the same Jharia Assembly seat against his cousin Sanjeev Singh as a candidate of the Indian National Congress and returned with second highest votes polled against his name[2]. On the night of 21st March, 2017 he was gunned down by gunmen (near Kunti Niwas) who were later linked to his cousin Sanjeev Singh who is now jailed and has a charge sheet against his name for the conspiracy of Niraj Singh's Murder.[3] Niraj was married to Purnima Niraj Singh, who went on to get elected as a Member of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from the same Jharia constituency by defeating Sanjeev Singh's wife Ragini Singh in the 2019 Jharkhand assembly elections[4].

Career

Business

[edit]

Niraj Singh began his professional career in Real Estate with the incorporation of Raghukul Infrastructures Private Limited in July 2008. [6]. His business interests extended from real estate to amusement, and most of the entities established by him still exist and are now inherited by his brothers. [7]

Politics

[edit]

Niraj Singh's first foray into politics was when he contested independent from Dhanbad assembly seat in the 2009 Jharkhand Assmebly Elections [8]. In 2010 he contested again as an independent candidate for the newly constituted post of Deputy Mayor of the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation and emerged winner this time. After the win he joined Indian National Congress and became a member of the party. Despite his growing popularity in the Dhanbad legislative constituency, he decided to contest his next Vidhan Sabha election from Jharia against cousin Sanjeev Singh for which he offered the following reasoning in an interview with the Times of India news- "I have come to Jharia because he has been messing around with me for the last few years. People here have not seen any development in the last 10 years when Kunti Devi was the MLA.I want to work for them. It’s no anarchy and MLAship is not a matter of inheritance; in a democracy, people will decide their representative".

When the Jharkhand state government enacted the CNT (Chhotanagpur Tenancy) ACT barring people of other castes from purchasing land from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes, he led out a huge procession opposing the same, along with his uncle Baccha Singh a former minister in the Jharkhand state government.
