DevPanel is a Colorado-based software company that builds tools to simplify how developers deploy and manage websites in their own cloud accounts.
The platform gives teams a browser-based control panel for creating and maintaining development, testing, and production environments across cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and DigitalOcean.
Unlike a traditional hosting provider, DevPanel does not run the sites itself; it connects to a customer’s cloud account and automates setup of servers, databases, and security policies.
History
[edit]DevPanel grew out of the Drupal open-source community. Founder Salim Lakhani began developing the project around 2015 and described it in an Opensource.com interview as “a cPanel for developers.”[1] The company was later incorporated in Aurora, Colorado, as a privately held SaaS provider. DevPanel continues to participate in the Drupal ecosystem through its project page and multiple community case studies published on Drupal.org.[2]
Platform and features
[edit]The software automates many DevOps tasks that normally require cloud expertise. Users can create complete environments with one click, deploy code from Git repositories, and work in a built-in browser version of Visual Studio Code. Security measures such as SSL certificates and role-based access are configured automatically, and the system can pause idle environments or use discounted “spot” instances to reduce costs.[3] DevPanel supports a range of frameworks including Drupal, WordPress, Magento, PHP, and Node.js.
Documented deployments
[edit]Independent case studies on Drupal.org describe DevPanel’s use in government, nonprofit, and education projects:
- Voice of America (VOA): Migrated 47 Drupal sites from Acquia hosting to AWS through DevPanel, projecting roughly US $800 000 in yearly savings.[4]
- A U.S. news agency: Scaled to 11 million daily pageviews and peaks of one million requests per minute after adopting DevPanel on AWS.[5]
- Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA): Moved more than 30 websites to AWS and now manages them with a single administrator using DevPanel.[6]
- Kaplan Early Learning Company: Completed a HIPAA-compliant Azure migration within weeks through DevPanel’s automated provisioning templates.[7]
- Parents Helping Parents: Eliminated all hosting costs by moving from WP Engine to AWS with DevPanel, while modernizing its WordPress codebase.[8]
- BCT Partners: Created compliant CI/CD pipelines for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in under 20 minutes during a live demo.[9]
- DrupalForge: Demonstrated DevPanel’s scalability by spinning up 1 000 functional Drupal sites in about ten minutes.[10]
Reception
[edit]Articles and podcasts within the open-source community describe DevPanel as a bridge between managed hosting and self-managed cloud infrastructure. Opensource.com and the Talking Drupal podcast both featured the product for offering Pantheon- or Acquia-style workflows while leaving ownership of infrastructure with the user.[1][11] Drupal.org case studies highlight its impact on cost savings, automation, and compliance across enterprise and nonprofit deployments.
