"Dethfashion" is the fifth episode of Metalocalypse's second season, which originally aired November 11, 2007. It was written by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and directed by Jon Schnepp. This episode has the death metal band Dethklok creating a fashion line of heavy metal clothing and explores topics such as negative body image, dieting, bulimia nervosa, and homophobia.
Plot
[edit]The episode begins with news footage of Dethklok playing at a fashion show. Accidentally, an aligator in the show bites a runway model, leading to subsequent animal attacks, general chaos, and numerous cases of accidental death and disfigurement. In a press conference held afterwards, frontman Nathan Explosion reiterates the band's dedication to fashion. The report concludes with news that the band has hired "notorious fashion murderer" Eric von Wiechlinghammer to design the band's fashion line.
Back at their headquarders, Mordhaus, the band explores bassist William Murderface's aversion to phallic shaped foods such as hot dogs and bananas. When samples from the new clothing line arrive, the members try the clothing on. The clothes are too tight for everyone except rhythm guitarist Toki Wartooth. Designer von Wiechlinghammer notices this fact and demands that the bandmembers loose weight because the clothes are tooled from "very rare leather."
The band takes the problem of weight loss to manager Charles Offdensen who suggests an exercise and diet program. Not willing to commit to such a program, the band dismisses Offdensen and lead guitarist Skwisgaar Skwigelf conducts nutrition and weight-loss research on the Internet. After over a month of following a diet of their own concoction, the band members have all gained twenty pounds.
In the meantime, the clothing line has become very successful, but stores have sold out. The band goes to confront von Wiechlinghammer about the supply problem and finds him and his staff skinning humans to replenish his stock of special leather. The episode closes as the band registers its surprise at the source of the leather and fires von Wiechlinghammer.
Production
[edit]The episode, which originally aired on November 11, 2007, was penned by Brandon Small and Tommy Blacha. It was directed by Jon Schnepp and all music was by Brendon Small. In addition to regular castmembers Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell, this episode featured the voices of Samoth, Ihsahn, and Trym Torson of Emperor.
Reception
[edit]Peter Atkinson of KNAC.com referred to Dethfashion as a "particularly Grand Guignol episode."[1]
Three characters in Dethfashion were voiced by former members of the now-defunct Norwegian symphonic black metal band Emperor.[1] Emporor's frontman Ihsahn voiced the character of fashion designer Eric von Wiechlinghammer, while former bandmates Samoth and Trym voiced two of the character's minions.[1] In an interview at KNAC.com, Ihsahn recalled comments from the black metal community that Emperor participating in the production of a cartoon was "very un-black metal and un-serious." In response, he said, "...we don't stick to rules like that and if you are that bound by rules, you shouldn't be into black metal in the first place.[1]
