ModuleMD is an American software company headquartered in Grand Blanc, Michigan. In the 1990s, two allergists identified a need for comprehensive software to help medical practices manage patient records and increase efficiency. Since then, ModuleMD has helped hundreds of practices manage more than 10 million medical records.

Company History[edit source]

[edit]

Before launching a product, the ModuleMD team spent two years collecting feedback from physicians and other healthcare providers, enhancing their understanding of the market’s needs and pain points. Based on that feedback, ModuleMD rolled out an SaaS solution for its first customer in 2002. Just seven years later, ModuleMD integrated with an ePrescribe partner to give users seamless prescribing capabilities.

In 2009, Congress passed the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. As part of the HITECH Act, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services introduced the Meaningful Use program,[1] which required providers to demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR). The ModuleMD team saw an opportunity to help medical practices comply with the new requirements, prompting them to obtain the Meaningful Use Stage I Certification from the Office of the National Coordinator for Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in 2011.[2]

Between 2011 and 2017, ModuleMD earned two additional ONC certifications. It was the first EHR to automatically upload data to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Registry for specialty-specific criteria, as well as the first EHR to partner with regional health information exchanges, enabling physician practices to connect to larger health systems. In 2018, the ModuleMD team turned its attention to the future of telehealth. Company executives realized more patients were asking for telemedicine services to make it easier to access quality healthcare. As a result, ModuleMD incorporated telehealth features into its platform.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance started its Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition Program in 2008.[3]To qualify as a medical home a provider must meet several criteria. Some of the requirements focus on the use of EHR to increase access to clinical advice,[4] share information with other healthcare professionals and make better clinical decisions. In 2019, ModuleMD earned its prevalidation status to help practices meet these PCMH requirements. In a bid to promote technological innovation, Silverstone Capital acquired ModuleMD in 2021. Since then, ModuleMD has continued to expand its service offerings, adding remote patient monitoring features in 2022.

Services[edit source]

[edit]

ModuleMD offers several services to help providers comply with federal regulations, achieve quality goals and increase cash flow. The company's management services include practice optimization and workflow analysis, business continuity consulting, new practice consulting and MIPS/MACRA advising. ModuleMD also offers revenue cycle management, transcription, payment processing and chronic care management for medical practices throughout the United States. Under the Medicare Access and Chip Reauthorization Act (MACRA), physicians and other healthcare providers must collect and submit data under the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).[5] Providers who comply fully have the opportunity to increase their reimbursement rates, while providers who don't submit the requested data may receive less money for their services. Understanding the MIPS and MACRA requirements allows medical practices to maximize their revenue and ensure all providers are reimbursed appropriately for their efforts.
