![]() | Evaluate an article
Complete your article evaluation below. Here are the key aspects to consider: Lead sectionA good lead section defines the topic and provides a concise overview. A reader who just wants to identify the topic can read the first sentence. A reader who wants a very brief overview of the most important things about it can read the first paragraph. A reader who wants a quick overview can read the whole lead section.
ContentA good Wikipedia article should cover all the important aspects of a topic, without putting too much weight on one part while neglecting another.
Tone and BalanceWikipedia articles should be written from a neutral point of view; if there are substantial differences of interpretation or controversies among published, reliable sources, those views should be described as fairly as possible.
Sources and ReferencesA Wikipedia article should be based on the best sources available for the topic at hand. When possible, this means academic and peer-reviewed publications or scholarly books.
Organization and writing qualityThe writing should be clear and professional, the content should be organized sensibly into sections.
Images and Media
Talk page discussionThe article's talk page — and any discussions among other Wikipedia editors that have been taking place there — can be a useful window into the state of an article, and might help you focus on important aspects that you didn't think of.
Overall impressions
Examples of good feedbackA good article evaluation can take a number of forms. The most essential things are to clearly identify the biggest shortcomings, and provide specific guidance on how the article can be improved. |
Which article are you evaluating?
[edit]Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?
[edit]I chose the article about the Free-Produce Movement. This movement was mentioned in the First Wave of Feminism slideshow we looked at during class. I thought the topic was interesting and I was curious to see if race played a role in which organizations were covered the most in the article. I was surprised to see that the article was relatively short given that there were many organizations that played a role in the movement.
Evaluate the article
[edit]The lead section is very concise and clearly explains the overall topic of the article in a few sentences. It clarifies the definition of "free" and "without cost" in the context of the article. One area of improvement for the lead section is there is currently no outline of the points/topics that will be covered in the article which would make the reading experience easier.
The article has a good balance of text and images, maintains a neutral tone, and has many of the terms used linked to other Wikipedia articles which is helpful in keeping the article concise, but allowing for the reader to look more deeply into the topic if they choose. There citations to sources placed frequently throughout the text.
I have prior knowledge of the impact of the Colored Female Free Produce Society that was formed in 1831. This society was mentioned in the "African Americans" section of the article, but the description of the specific society was not very comprehensive. I clicked the to the "Colored Female Produce Society of Pennsylvania" to see that it is not yet a created article on Wikipedia. I feel like it would be beneficial for this specific organization to be described further to balance it with other organizations who have more extensive descriptions, especially because it does not have its own Wikipedia page.
