Taylor Business Institute Chicago (TBI) is a privately operated, female minority-owned private, for-profit college located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1962, the institution offers associate degrees, certificates, test preparation programs, and English language instruction to a diverse, international student body.[1] It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission[2] and approved to enroll F-1 international students.
History
[edit]Taylor Business Institute was established in 1962 as the Nancy Taylor Secretarial School. In 1986, the institution was acquired by Janice C. Parker, who transitioned the college toward associate degree and certificate programs aligned with workforce needs. Since then, TBI has expanded its academic offerings and institutional mission, receiving regional accreditation in 2017.
Mission and Vision
[edit]TBI promotes higher learning that empowers a broad-based student population through general education, applied degrees, non-matriculation coursework, test preparation, and certifications for success in a global society.
Campus and Facilities
[edit]The college is located at 29 East Madison Street in Chicago’s historic Heyworth Building. Its campus includes classrooms, computer labs, and administrative offices. In 2025, TBI proposed a classroom extension in Naperville, Illinois, currently pending approval from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE).
Academics
[edit]As of 2023, Taylor Business Institute's reported tuition and fees were approximately $325 per credit hour for degree programs.[3] Tuition may vary depending on program type, delivery format, and student eligibility for scholarships or grant assistance.[4]
Taylor Business Institute offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in:
- Accounting Technician
- Criminal Justice & Security Administration
- Electronics Engineering Technology
- Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
TBI also offers a 70-week English as a Second Language (ESL) certificate program and a six-quarter Online ESL program. The college uses hybrid delivery models that combine in-person and online learning formats.
Specialized Programs
[edit]In 2024, TBI launched a structured USMLE Preparation Program for international medical graduates. The program prepares students for all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), a trademark of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), and includes:
- Live and recorded lectures
- Access to practice question banks and simulations
- F-1 visa sponsorship
- Individualized mentoring and test preparation support.[5]
Level Playing Field Foundation
[edit]Taylor Business Institute established the Level Playing Field Foundation (LPF) in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising scholarship funds and providing supportive services for economically disadvantaged students. Since its inception, LPF has awarded over $747,000 in scholarships.[6]
Community Engagement
[edit]As part of the Chicago Neighborhood Rebuild Program, Taylor Business Institute collaborates with the Chicago Community Loan Fund (CCLF) and the City of Chicago to support underrepresented developers and general contractors. The partnership delivers no-cost workshops aimed at helping these entrepreneurs avoid predatory high-interest lenders and instead access affordable financing through CDFIs (Community Development Financial Institutions).[7][8]
Accreditation and Approvals
[edit]Taylor Business Institute is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)[9] and licensed by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). The institution is also approved by:
