Jagannath University Chhatra Dal (Bengali: জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্রদল), also known as Jagannath Chatradal, is the student wing of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Jagannath University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is considered a super unit of the central JCD due to its influence and history of political activism.

Many senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) began their political careers in Jagannath Chhatra Dal and rose to national prominence from this platform.

History

[edit]

Jagannath University traces its origins to 1858 with the establishment of Dhaka Brahmo School. It was later renamed Jagannath College and eventually became a full-fledged university in 2005 under the government of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

The Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal was founded on 1 January 1979 as the student organization of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Since the time of Jagannath College, the unit at Jagannath has been one of the most influential wings under the central leadership of JCD.

Jagannath University Chhatra Dal has historically participated in national democratic movements and has consistently played an active role in campus protests, political demands, and BNP-declared student programs.

Recent Developments

[edit]

In December 2024, a new committee was announced with Mehedi Hasan Himel as Convenor and Shamsul Arefin as Member Secretary.[1]

The full committee was declared in February 2025, comprising 455 members.[2]

Activities

[edit]

Jagannath University Chhatra Dal frequently takes part in protests and reform campaigns. Notable actions include:

  • Presenting a 21-point reform demand for the university’s development.[3]
  • Campaigning for the return of student dormitories under student control.
  • Demanding free and fair student union elections.

Controversies

[edit]

In April 2025, some members of the unit were accused of involvement in a campus altercation, leading to class boycotts and protests by general students.[4]
