Social Risks of AI

[edit]

There can be serious social risks and challenges to AI. One theory is that AI will effect what users see on social media or in ads. Companies like Google, YouTube, and Facebook utilize advanced algorithmic methods to determine what users see. So one risk of AI would be that it grows to control the flow of information on the internet. This is especially true paired with the fact that most people get their news from the internet instead of tv now as per a Pew Research study[1]. The source of risk does not lie in the idea that AI will do this on its own but the source comes from the idea if someone or a group can use it to spread misinformation.

Political Repercussions
[edit]

In the 2016 United States presidential election, a scandal occurred involving Cambridge Analytica mining data from Facebook users without their knowledge and giving it to Donald Trump's campaign. Scandals like these paired with predictive technology and Artificial Intelligence could have dangerous implications domestically and internationally. Cambridge Analytica is also said to have had influence in over 100 campaigns all over the world[2]. This shows that this precursor data mining technology has global demand from politicians and government entities.

AI Rights

There is an on going debate about whether or not advanced Artificial Intelligence should be given rights and be considered humans. One side of this debate would say that only biological humans are true people so only they should have rights. While the other side would question what it means to be human. Their argument brings into question the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence[3] and challenges our ideas of consciousness. This debate could have the potential to further polarize our population on Artificial Intelligence. In fact, a good portion of Americans say that the outcome of AI being developed will be bad[4]. The fear people feel for an AI uprising could lead to the mistreatment of AI as people, which could cause resentment from the AI towards people. [5]
