Mauritian Twos

[edit]

These are weak hands — 5-10 HCP or a bad 11 HCP (W200#24N) — 5+ cards in one suit, 4+ cards in another suit, with 8 losers or fewer.

  • They are for opening bids, not for overcalls or responses.
  • Prefer to open at the 1-level if you can — e.g. with 10 HCP and two 5-card suits, giving you two length points.
  • If you have 6 cards in a major, prefer to open a Weak Two.
  • If you have 7 cards in a suit, prefer to open with a 3-level pre-empt, unless you have 4+ cards and a stopper in another suit.'. (F200#2N)
  • The majority of your HCP should be in your two suits, but don't give up if they aren't. (C201#32N) .
  • The three bids that comprise Mauritian Twos are:
    • 2: 9+ cards in two suits, of which hearts is a 4-5 card suit.
    • 2Error: {{SS}} missing name (help): 9+ cards in two suits, of which spades is a 4-5 card suit. The other suit is a minor.
    • 2NT: At least 5-4 in the minors. (F200#1S)
  • With a 0-4-5-4 shape in Error: {{SS}} missing name (help)---, bid 2 in preference to 2NT. (C201#27S)

Advice for subsequent bidding

[edit]
  • Partners should remember to deduct a loser with a 9+ card fit. (F200#34E)
