Healthcare Content Management (HCM) describes the digitization concept of consolidating all medically relevant data of a healthcare institution and making them accessible throughout the institution and also between institutions. It is the modern, intelligent approach for managing all structured and unstructured document and image contents in a uniform system.

It combines medical document management with image management. This includes the areas of picture archiving and communication system (PACS), enterprise imaging (EI) and vendor neutral archive (VNA), enterprise and universal viewer as well as workflow and connectivity solutions which are specific for medical image and video capture.

Data management in healthcare is subject to specific basic conditions which pose a challenge to digitization. Specific laws and ordinances must be observed and they comprise a comparatively narrow scope with regard to the handling of patient and treatment data. Enterprise content management (ECM) therefore cannot be directly transferred to healthcare institutions, even though the five major tasks of ECM are also relevant for healthcare institutions. Because here, it is also particularly important to

HCM is a concept and not a system. Solutions which help implement this concept in practice are known as healthcare content management systems (HCM systems). To a certain extent, these involve specialized enterprise content management systems. HCM is thus a product-neutral concept and an approach to a solution for implementing digitization in the healthcare sector. Software products which implement the concept to varying degrees or parts thereof are of course also used for this purpose.
