My class in 1969 was the first class to attend all 4 years in the new building. We had no sports for females, yet I was President of the class of 1969. In 1960, I attended Nead grade school. When the Principal/Coach started a baseball team, I tried out for the team , becoming the only girl on the team. IHSAA said I could play only while in Elementary. My Dad, little league coach went to school to question how I made the team, since little league didn’t allow girls to play. Dad had tryouts with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1942 but couldn’t play as he went to WW2. The boys on the team persuaded me to tryout as I played at recess with them. Dad let me play and was instrumental in starting a 4 team fastpitch softball through the YMCA for girls. In 1984, a head coaching job opened up in the school in which I taught. The Assistant was asked to take the job, but he came to me and said I knew more about baseball than him . He told me to apply for the joy. When I was denied an interview,I went to the AD and asked why I couldn’t get an interview. He said,” the administration didn’t want a girl doing a man’s job.” That was 1981. I got the job in 1984 after 3 years in the courts. I was told that the boys wouldn’t respect a woman. In 2020 I had a triple bypass. Two boys, now men,mid 40’s,came 2 days to rake the leaves at my house. That’s respect! Oh, we won the Sectional that year. We were 1A playing a 5A school. I was fired the last day of school but winning that Sectional made them rehire me another year ! “Murry” Maureen Hight
