Michael Ethan Belmear (born June 22, 2002) is an American software engineer and podcaster. He is a software developer at D.A. Davidson Companies and co-host of the Christian podcast The Perfect Lens.

Early life and education

[edit]

Belmear was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on June 22, 2002. As a child in a military family, he moved frequently. After his birth, his family relocated to Tacoma, Washington, where his two younger sisters were born. He later lived in O'Fallon, Illinois, where he attended kindergarten through second grade. In third grade, his family settled in Eagle River, Alaska, where he remained through high school.

In Eagle River, Belmear attended Ravenwood Elementary, Mirror Lake Middle School, and Chugiak High School. He was actively involved in athletics throughout his youth, playing soccer, basketball, and the occasional game of neighborhood pond hockey. In high school, he competed in cross country running and varsity soccer, lettering in both sports.

Belmear graduated from Chugiak High School in 2020, ranking 8th in a class of 175. He graduated summa cum laude with a cumulative GPA of 4.13, earning the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, recognition as an AP Scholar, and as a member of the National Honor Society.

He then attended Montana State University on scholarship, where he earned a B.A. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Finance, along with minors in Accounting, Data Science, and Economics. He graduated with highest honors in December 2024.[1][2]

While at Montana State, he was active in campus ministries such as Chi Alpha and The Navigators, and was involved in his local church. He also played intramural soccer and recreational ice hockey.

Belmear is the eldest child of Jay and Amy Belmear. His father is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force. Belmear has spoken openly about the challenges of growing up as a military child, including frequent relocations and the emotional distance caused by his father's demanding career. He has said these experiences contributed to behavioral struggles during his youth.[3]

During college, Belmear became a Christian and has since been vocal about his faith and the influence of God in his personal development.[3]

While at Montana State, Belmear completed three internships with D.A. Davidson Companies—two in wealth management and one in software engineering. Following graduation, he was hired as a full-time software developer at the firm.[3]

The Perfect Lens Podcast

[edit]

In 2022, Belmear co-founded The Perfect Lens, a Christian podcast created with co-hosts Zach Johnson and Tal Rogers. The show aims to help listeners view contemporary issues and personal struggles through a Christ-centered perspective—what the hosts refer to as “the perfect lens.” Each episode features candid discussions on topics such as identity, change, relationships, and spiritual growth, with an emphasis on applying biblical principles to everyday life.[4]

The podcast has gained traction among young adult audiences for its relatable tone and faith-driven content. Belmear frequently draws from his personal experiences, including his conversion and background as a military child, to contribute to the show’s message. As of December 2022, The Perfect Lens had released 29 episodes and was available on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and Buzzsprout.[4]

Personal life
