Tony Curtis was spotted by Billy Wilder whilst he was making the film Houdini^[1], as he thought he would perfect for the role of Joe. "I was sure Tony was right for it" explained Wilder - "because he was quite handsome, and when he tells Marilyn that he is one of the Shell Oil family, she has to be able to believe it". ^[2]

Originally, Mitzi Gaynor was considered for the role of Sugar, however, it ultimately was given to Marilyn who had previously worked alongside Wilder, during the making of The Seven Year Itch.^[3]
